I've searched hi and lo here in Northern VA for an AC evaporator for my 1976 F350, 2 wheel drive with 460. I've spoken to contacts at LMC, and Obsolete Ford parts--neither had the item. Ford dealers in this area don't have a listing. Could not find one on EBay. I believe this evaporator was used up to 79. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
Pardon my ignorance, but do you mean the compressor? If not, what does an evaporator look like?
I got a 74 460/c6 and was gonna rebuild it until I found the block was trash. Aside from the block, crank, pistons, & cam, I have everything else off of it in boxes. It had AC and I know I have the compressor.
If I know exactly what you're looking for I can see if I have one.
Vett,
These parts are not that vintage. You should be able to call Pep Boys or some other local yocal and find an evaporator. I'll call around down here in florida and see what I can find.
Secondly, not to vettster but to the previous post, the evaporator is the coil inside your truck. It's the thing that get's cold when the A/C is on.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Jul-02 AT 10:52 PM (EST)]Really don't want to go with used evaporator; assuming I could find 79 vintage, 23 years is getting near upper limit for an evaporator. Given expense of installing and recharging (1 lb. cans of R12 are going for $60 in Northern VA), I would like to avoid going "used" on the evap. I spent $180 this morning for 2 cans of R12 and dye test just to locate the leak. If I can find a new evaporator, I think I'm going to replace everything but the condenser, and convert to R134. I found a local outfit that will make up new lines. If I go this route, I'll do the remove and replace, then take it to the shop for vacuum draw down/leak check, and recharge.
