460 radiator options?
I know I can make the smaller version fit ok, but will it do the trick as far as keeping the 460 cool? I don't plan on pulling a trailer until I get my original rad rebuilt. It is running way too hot and needs help, and I am on a budget, so I am looking for a junkyard donor. The last one I got for my 78 351M was a perfect used unit, and still works well.
Will I experience any problems with the smaller rad? I already have to relocate the trans cooler, but no big deal.

It would be great if it was within my budget! Unless there is a good used one laying around for temp use?
Let me know!

It sits just left of center everywhere I drive.
I'm talking Jobber price for a Rad.
Not Ford Dealer.
If you go 3 core 460 the fan shroud won't fit as it's narrower.
Go to the Rad shop on 17 ave & 34 st SE in Forest Lawn south side of the street.
Ask for Wade, tell him you know me and I sent you there to sell you a rad for MY price.
I'm connected to the largest RAD shops in Wetsern Canada.
I'll in turn call him tomorrow and give him a head's up you're coming some day.

Here is my big rad on the right, (3 core) with the standard rad like on my 351M on the left.
You should also see the thickness difference in the two other pics: the tops are quite different, and the big three core has room for a 4th row!

If you can find one at a junkyard - look for a Camper or Trailer Special. They probably have one if not yanked.
Recoring it would be the best option, providing if it's still slavagable.
Or use "Dennis Discount".

corect me if I am wrong but didn't they use the Fat rad. in the F-500-750? I have seen a few of those ugly beasts and I think that is what they have in them. like I said I don't know for certin but it might be worth a look see for the people looking for one of these fatties.
Oh ya I paid $350. brand new for mine in washington st.
I just installed a BRAND NEW desert cooler super-mama rad in my truck, only this one has an extra row to make a total of four rows of tubes! (thanks, Dennis!!!)
BUT: I get everything installed, and at 10 pm and no more than 65 degrees outside, I let it idle in the driveway: HOT! The gauge shot up in no time. I also noticed that the thermostat (192) didn't even open until the gauge was at about 3/4 up. Now, I don't know about the rest of you, but my 78 F150 with 351M ALWAYS runs in the low 1/4 of the scale, no matter how hot it is outside. It has never even gotten to halfway. Now, is this normal for a 460 to run in the upper end of the scale??? Has anyone heard of a sending unit being that much out in temperature?
It didn't go over scale at all, until I shut the truck off for two minutes... restart and it went slowly back within the scale, where it stays at. Now, what's gonna happen when I am driving in some heat again? Bad stuff?
The heater is putting out much better heat than before; in fact it is super hot, like my 78 is. (if this matters at all; no apparent heater core plugging)
I retarded the timing some, even though I have never heard this engine ping before, and still no difference in temp.
I took it for a drive in the nice cool night air, but the temp stayed at the top of scale.
That is all the detail I can give. I hope someone out there can help with a good suggestion? I have a long trip to take tomorrow.

Ford started it; Ford will finish it!
Removing the thermostat and bench testing it.(pot of water with candy thermometer in it too,on the stove with the burner on)
Checking the ICVR at the sending unit connector for the speed of pulse of power.
Taking the sending unit out and cleaning it off and re-installing it.
Then see what happens.
Ford Gauges are NOT THE BEST in this world.

Also, to test the calibration of the gauge, I am going to need two resistors: a 10 ohm to check high temp, and a 73 ohm to check low temp readings. (unless there is an easier way?)
But, I will do as you suggest, and clean the sending unit, or possibly even replacing it, if there is a steady voltage pulse with the engine hot (from the gauge lead). I am hoping that is the only problem!
Thanks Dennis.
Oh, and I got a 4 row for 460 bucks! The place my rad was at could only do 475, so I went with Wade's shop. My decision came from the repair estimate of $400; a little extra gets me the new one anyway, with 2 year warranty! Needless to say, my rad was kaput!
