Not 100% sure on this but some 351's had a relief hole in the thermostat. I know Clevelands need it. Small 1/16" hole right in the thermostat is all it is. Double check this as I have had to replace head gaskets and a cam because I did not have the correct thermostat.
I have 3 different thermostats for my 460 now, all different makes and temp. None of them have a relief hole.
The system is holding pressure: When I shut the truck off, the top rad hose is hard.
Just bought a sending unit today; gonna try it out later.

Well, the trip to Banff was a success. Even though the gauge read almost at the top, when I shut it off in town, there was no overflow happening. I came back and bought a sending unit from Ukrainian Wire. I installed it and fired it up. The gauge now reads about 5/8, a far cry from the top of scale! I guess the old unit was sending too little resistance for the amount of heat there. I wonder though:Is the center of the gauge typical for a big block with a new rad and a 192 degree thermostat? I am happy that at least she isn't overheating. I was lucky that I didn't have a complete boilover at any time!
Now I have to turn the mixture screws back in a little to lean it back out to where it was. (another safety measure)
Thanks fellas!

Living in Calgary you know how much the temperature can fluctuate at any time of the year.
The real test is driving home on McLeod Trail at 4:00 pm on the hottest day in August when it's bumper to Bumper traffic.
Or do you live in the NW ?
There are too many variables when it comes to temp gauges.
Mark,You did get the sending unit for a gauge and not an idiot light,Right?
I live in SE, Mckenzie Lake.
I asked about the gauge, and the guy said there wasn't any other option for the sending unit on that particular truck and with that motor except for gauge-type. What am I looking for on engine block ground strap? Poor connection?

There should be Flat braided cables going from the Hood to the Firewall > From the Engine Block to the Firewall.
The one on the hodd gives a good ground for Hood light.
The engine to firewall cable gives a good ground for Sending units as the insulatprs on the block isn't a good ground.
Ahhh... I see! Thanks Dennis, I'll get on that tomorrow! I just had to fix my wife's car. She ran it quite low on oil (apparently girls don't check oil) and collapsed a hydraulic lifter. It wouldn't pressurize again, so I removed the culprit and took one from my spare motor (Nissan CA20E, 4 cylinder) and replaced with that. It pumped up in no time, so I put it all back together and told her to ALWAYS check the oil once a week! (it has been using oil for a while now) She was lucky this time: could have been much worse! The cam seems ok, and the rockers.
I guess it is time to do the valve seals. I hope the rental spring compressor is tiny enough to get in there: Not much clearance around those aluminum cylinder heads! I believe that to be my main cause of oil loss. Compression is 150-155 on all 4.

Guess what??? I don't see a ground strap from the block anywhere! Where should this be located? I see on my other truck (78) the one for the hood light, but not even that on the 76 in question! I can always grab one from the wreckers... Just need to know where to look for it? Is it right side of block, rear?

I just transplanted a 460 into my '78 F-150. It had a 400 in it. Will the 460 run at a normal temperature with the original 400 radiator? I probably won't put a thermostat back in the motor until winter.
I just put a slightly modified 460 in my 78 crewcab, I used a 195 thermostat, and a good 400 radiator, no problems yet. she runs right in the middle of the scale, it climbs a little when I am in traffic sitting still in 100 degree weather. Works good.

It depends on where you live and the temps.
It should run cool enough.
Why are you running WITHOUT a thermostat?
It should have something in there to run close to the proper temp.
Well, since the 460 is in my farm truck, it will either be pulling a cow trailer, hauling hay, pulling equipment, or just about anything else when it is running. Therefore, the temp. will get warm regardless of the thermostat not being there.
