Heya, as some of you know I have a 1994 Ranger XLT reg cab with the 4.0 V6 and 5 speed manual tranny.
When I am accelerating and I run above 2000 rpm before shifting, as soon as I let off the gas and hit the clutch, there is somewhat of a buzz as the engine winds down before I let into the next gear. I really don't know how to explain it at all other than that. It's not really audible unless the radio is down low. My dad said it was nothing at all to worry about. No vibration or anything associated with it. No other effects, just a buzz noise as the rpm winds down below 2000. Any suggestions, or no big deal?
Can you make it make the noise while in your driveway by bringing it up to 2000rpms and letting off? The first thing that comes to my mind is an exhaust shield rattle.
sorry I kinda forgot about my own topic. I will try that on Thursday when it gets back from paint, until then no truck. Makes me rather sad to not have it. Thanks for the reply though, sorry I didn't see it sooner.
Throwout bearing is what I thought of too, having owned an '88 2.9 w/5 spd. for 12 years and 200K. Mine never went bad, but it was occasionally a little buzzy similar to described, in it's later years.
make sense that it would only do it above 2000 rpm? It will sometimes come and go randomly, i.e. I will rev it up outta say a stop sign and it'll rattle a little after 2000 rpm for just a little bit of the power band, then stop, other times it will do it at other powers. Random, but always above 2K. Thanks!
No, if it's the throwout bearing, I wouldn't think it would be limited to above 2000 rpm.
As Ken said, it could be an exhaust shield rattle.
Check the shields when it's cold, at all weld points, for cracks along the welds. Bumping the shields with a rubber mallet helps bring out the sound if it's cracked, or just look closely at any movement you can get with your bare hand.
If you find a cracked one, it's up to you whether you finish breaking the shield off, have it welded, or clamp it tight with a big hose clamp or two.
Depends on whether anyone might park over high grass or dry leaves, etc.
I have the same truck with the same noise... not sure exactly what heppend, but in the end I had the wonderufl opputrunity to buy a new transmission...
