The CEL blinks and you count. There's a pause in between the pulses.
What happened to the blue background quotes in italics?
Well, I looked up how to read the codes in my Hayne's manual. They describe how to do it with a voltmeter and even have a picture of it. They also have a picture of the EEC-IV Test connector. They also mention reading codes from the CEL but don't say how. The instructions are as follows:
a. Turn the ignition key off for at least 10 seconds.
b. Locate the Diagnostic Test Connector inside the engine compartment...
Well, I can't "locate" it!!! Where is it? Is it connected to something and I need to unplug it or does it have a cap on it or what? From the picture I can't even tell which part of the engine compartment they are in. I also can't tell from the diagram where the jumper connects. but I'm guessing that the DTC disconnects from the harness and the jumper reconnects one of the wires that was disconnected? It says where the EEC-IV is but that's easy to find. This is making me feel really stupid. I suspected that I was part of a '50s psychological experiment and now it is becomming apparent that it's true.
If my CEL has not come on should I even bother with reading the codes? I just thought that since I don't have any major problems with the Explorer at the moment I would see if I could find something that's perhaps slightly amiss and maybe get a little better performance or gas mileage etc.
Nothing wrong with proactive maintenance. I do the same. Jerry listed a pretty good web site earlier that covers all this Admin Note: tech article on this site lists codes. Please see our guidelines.
My 93 has the connector at the passenger rear of engine compartment, up high. You might have a cover over it but I think a dealer lost mine years ago. You now what it looks like from you manual plus there is another little gray connector, single wire - that ones needs to be jumpered.
huh, huh, huh....we can't list web sites anymore? Thats a primary helping tool. Where are these guidelines of which you speak? I've gone all over this forum and I can't find a link to any guiedlines.

I was wondering about that myself. Apparently it's the URL that I posted, but I haven't heard squat about this. I looked this site over for about 1½ hrs last night and I still haven't found the supposed posting guidlines, and I notice that the Admin didn't see any need to hyperlink them to the Admin note.
There is a link to the guidelines in my sig if you need it. Click on the 'FTE Moderator' link...
My guess is that you posted a copyright article or link. FTE had a problem some time back about someone having copyrighted material on here, so the administration has put it in the guidelines for no copyrighted material be reproduced - only linked to. I am only guessing this was the reason, but will see if I can get better clarification.
Cobra - what got censored on my post the the www. link - 2 of them. Jerry's earlier post had one of the same links. I just copied it in case therealulysses missed it the first time. Jerry's post on this thread still has the link. I didn't have any material other than a web link and my pop-off mouth which is still on the post. Maybe I pissed off Mr you know who...
When I have tried to paste links here they always get abbreviated or lost and in any case don't work. Maybe links are considered "attachments" here.
I've also tried searching for posts on specific subjects but never find what I'm looking for. There must be a trick to it. I have dialup service and it takes a LONG time to load each page just to see if it's relavent.
Hemet's not the boonies. They have a zip code now. Besides. Verizon offers wireless broadband to any one with a zipcode (not sure but would make a great marketing campaign).

AAAgggghhhhhh Wrong answer. You've got to live within a certain distance of the appropriate switching gear or station. I know this, because I don't meet these qualifications. I know folks within 5 miles of my house that have DSL, but not here. That's why they have you to enter your phone number when to see if DSL will work for you or not.
