Question 1979 transfer case oil type?

I should be embarrassed to ask this...
I got an 1979 f-250 plow truck 4x4 - sitting all summer - (it's a yard truck only)
& it ran great last year, now it goes it reverse fine, forward is ruff, (wines & moves slowly)

front transfer case needs oil (I assume the back & middle will too)
but I'm not sure what kind of oil to add.

the owners manual looks like I should add transmission fluid, but it looks black & smells burnt.

What should I add?

thanks! Mike

Are you talking about the differentials or do you have 3 transfer cases? I use 80W90 in my diffs and tcase.

front transfer case needs oil

ummm? i assume you only have one t case and a front and rear diff. use 80w90 in all of them. the whine is most likely from the tranny add oil to it also. use gear oil if it is a manual and type f tranny fluid if it is a auto.

Thanks ford390,
I added, but i guess my real problem is the transmission as the truck will only go in reverse now, it feels like it's just not engaging in drive. i was going to buy the hayes book & open the transmission in hopes to fix it, hopefully i can figure it out.
Do you think there's any chance a newbe would be able to recognize the problem?

wish me luck!

Drain all the tranny fluid, including from the torque converter (which can be a hassle). Though I think on the C-6 it is as simple as rotating the engine (tranny in N) by hand until the plug comes around. It has been a decade or two since I have done it...

Then change the filter. Then add tranny fluid and a conditioner, I think most people like Lucas.

If I had to guess what has happened is that the clutch plates have dried out or the fluid has gone bad by absorbing moisture. One thing to check while you are under the truck is that the vent for the tranmission and its hose are in good working order. Sometimes water can find its way into the transmission from rain water running down a broken hose. I forget if that year transmission had a button vent, hose and valve, or just a plain hose.

Any fluid that looks black needs to be changed. Gear oil is fairly cheap so I would change the fluids all around.
