I see all these people talking about getting 20+mpg with their Ford 6.0 and 7.3 diesel's. I just purchased a new 2005 F350 CC 4X4 Dually with the 6.0l and automatic transmission. Now have 10,000 miles on the truck and don't come close to these figures, average 15mpg highway unloaded at 65mph and 12mpg loaded towing a trailer weighting about 11000 lbs, smae speed. I get better milage with my 1999 Dodge 3500 Cummings Dually with a 5 speed standard transmission than I get with the Ford.
This just makes me wonder what a man lies most about? How good of fuel milage he gets on his truck?
Later.....

SHOWIN.... TWO POINTS IN YOUR COMPARISON. FIRST OF, WAS YOUR DODGE A 4X4...DOESN'T SAY. ALSO YOU'RE COMPARING A MANUAL TRANSMISSION TO AN AUTOMATIC. THE MANUAL WILL ALWAYS GET BETTER FUEL MILEAGE..lESS TORQUE LOSS. WAS JUST WONDERING IF YOU WERE COMPARING APPLES TO APPLES
My miles are 16-17 around town empty nursing it like the old man im becoming, highway i cant drive 65 so anything above 2000 rpms seems to hurt mileage.03/04, 4x4 f250, auto, standard cab long bed

I took a trip last month(right before katrina) from Chicago to Florida. I had just under 10K on my truck when I left and I was pulling a 6000 pound scuba trailer. I put right at 4000 miles on my truck. I got 15.3 miles pulling the trailer and I was only getting about 16.1 before the trip. I got back home and since I have been getting 18.3 without the trailer. I can't figure it out but after reading this group for a while and seeing the mileage that some are getting and I wasn't, I'm feeling pretty good. I dove along the whole gulf and up the east coast to Vero Beach.
Well Guys: I can get 20 -22.5 mpg from my truck! The numbers are hand calculated. I can get the numbers any time the temps are above 40 F. The truck is an 04, 250, CC, short box, 2wd. six speed, 6.0L. All I have to do is keep the revs below 2,000 and short shift,on the way up. Hauling a trailer I get from 10.5 to 14 depending on the trailer, (30ft 5th wheel or 24 ft enclosed car hauler), how much of a hurry I'm in and the wind conditions.
Showin4fun I would think that with the rig you have your mileage is good. You likley loose about 2mpg with the auto, another 2 with 4x4 and the duals will cost you 1-2 mpg. Taking this into account your mileage is similar to the liars that post here.

Well lets see here why do most of us have a crew cab diesel long bed four wheel drive compensation for what??? HHMMMMM well anyways enough said. Milage really does depend on 2 or 4 wheel drive and how fast you go. With the newer automatic trannies they are not going to hurt your milage as much as the old ones. But with my new 6.0 it's mileage is not near my 7.3 but maybe with time that will improve so 6.0 13.9 to 14.2 at 70-75 mph. My 7.3 17.5to 18 at same speed.
I was only getting about 16.1 before the trip. I got back home and since I have been getting 18.3 without the trailer.
BINGO!!! I have found the same thing-
You want better mpg with your 6.0 PSD: Run highway tires (near full inflation) with less aggressive tread and hook-up a loaded trailer occasionally. I am one of those guys that gets over 18 mpg on the highway at 80-85 mph...Sometimes over 19 mpg. My combined city/hwy is 16-17.5 mpg. Why? I rarely drive less than 10 miles anywhere, usually it is 20, 30 or more miles up mountain passes, sometimes pulling a load at high elevation and roadtrips that don't include traffic jams- But when I install my very aggressive winter studdded tires I am lucky to see 16 mpg on the highway. In the winter I average 14-15 mpg
If you want low mpg: Drive short distances frequently/Not allowing the engine to completely get up to operating temp. Don't ever tow, haul or drive on mountain passes- Never make your 6.0 work hard for more than about 45 seconds. Still want to decrease mpg? Lift your truck and install larger and/or aggressive A/T or mud tires.
Granted, some trucks will get better mpg than others... I have found that my average mpg has actually increased during the past 25,000 miles (now at 64,000). I use M1 synthetic 5W40 oil and Diesel Kleen with every tank. Maybe there is a method to my madness? Anything is possible
I've got almost 45K miles. Mileage hasn't changed since new; many talk how much it will jump after break-in. I haven't seen this with this diesel or my previous diesel.
I fill to the brim everytime and keep records. These numbers are hand calculated (and Excel calculated when I key the data into my spreadsheet).
I have two different trips where I have gotten a little over 18 MPG running solo at 70 MPH. Those are the best numbers I have. Anywhere from mid 14s to mid 15s for overall driving.
Anywhere from 9 to 13 when towing 6,000 lb 24 ft. travel trailer at 70-75 MPH.
Bug shield on the front; C-Betr spot mirrors; and Fold-A-Cover over the bed. Use Diesel Kleen at every fill-up. Currently running Rotella Dino; going to give synthetic a try next oil change which will be at the 45K mark.
Funny thing is we were talking about what men lie about at work the other day with one of three friends I have who has an 05 Duramax. I actually believe his fuel economy numbers but the other two were the subject of our conversation. How big the fish was; how great their fuel mileage is; and there is a third.....
There are also those that don't keep regular records of their fuel mileage. They decide to do a check; fill it, and squeeze a little more in than usual after the first click off.... next fill-up.... calculate off of the fuel pumped at the first point the pump shuts off....
I am sure I could get much better highway mileage if I would slow down but too often it is just plain unsafe to drive that much slower than traffic; heck, I'm the slow guy at the speed limit.

I'm one of those liars that claims 20+ highway. But I think utahtom is right - I pull a 4000 to 5000 lb trailer every few weeks. And I don't do a lot of in town, short trip stuff - probably 80 to 90% highway at 65 to 70 mph. I have 20K miles and saw an improvement at 10K of maybe 2mpgs.
If you go out to my truck right now the lie-o-meter shows 19.1 and that's on two tanks since reset. The last reset was for four tanks and showed 18.4 at reset, but I had more in town than usual on those tanks. And yes, I've hand calculated and the lie-o-meter is very close.
I run my 18" Conti's at 63psi and I use Diesel Kleen at every other fillup.
I see my signature line is being left off once posted. I have an 05 F250 FX4 with an ARE bed cover; no mods. So I'm not dually and I'm sure six wheels on the ground instead of four makes a big difference. Plus a little more weight on the F350 dually.
My average is 15 mpg. I get way better in the winter because my trips are longer and the speed is more constant, and I can't drive like an idiot (which I do in the other 3 seasons) or I'll be another statisitc. As a carpenter/project coordinator my travels are short because of the small town I live in.
These trucks come in so many different variations that it's like trying to compare apples to oranges. You have a dually, and along with that a lower final drive ratio then most SRW trucks. A heavier GVW, and more rolling resistance, also add to the equation. Do you have a cap?, 4X4?, crew cab?, long bed? One thing I can say with a degree of certainty, the Torque shift trans doesn't cause you to burn more fuel, if your doing a constant highway speed, with the converter locked up you ain't going to see any difference in mileage.
I have an 04 Super cab, long bed TS with 3.73 rear, and I've been getting 20.6 mpg at a constant 65 mph, this according to the overhead computer. I run 70 psi f/r, use Mobil 1, and Oil Guard, and have a folding bed cover. I have never been able to reach 21 mpg driving at that speed, but I'm sure if I drove at 55 mph, my mileage would take a considerable jump. Mileage on truck is 38K.
I guess I can jump in here as well, I have a 2003 SB,CC,SRW 4x4 with 30,000 miles, just did a trip from Iowa to Oklahoma and back through Arkansas, through the mountains. Almost 2000 miles round trip, going down was mostly interstate with the cruise set at 70-75, comming back was less than 100 miles interstate, cruise rarely used and speeds between 30 and 70. Hand calculated every tank full of fuel, tried my very best to fill up to the same point on every tank. Averaged 20.19 for the trip, and had one tank that was over 21.5, worst tank was 19.1. Was getting about 430 miles between fill ups, and i never let the gauge go below 1/4 tank. Lie-O-Meter stayed in the 18.5 to 19 range. I have only had this truck about 4 months, and most of my driving is short trips with a 100 mile trip one a week. before my trip I was getting 15.5 to 16.3 doing my running around driving, since my trip I am getting almost 17 on every tank full. And this is all hand figured, lie-o-meter says 17.3-17.7. So I am going to go with the guys that says running them at a good speed for a distance changes something. But whatever milage it is getting it is kicking the sh---out of the 5.4 I traded in. It would not get above 12 no matter how you drove it, and if you pulled something you needed to pull a tanker with you.
