Ok, ive got an 87 F-250 4x4 460, and i was going to switch out the stock timing set for a pre 71, but ive read that 86 and later timing sets are set for TDC like the pre 71 sets, so I'm not sure its necessary, even though i probably will when i switch out the cam just because it would be a good time to do it.
To know for sure you would need to degree the camshaft. Since this entails pulling the front cover off, you might as well install a quality timing chain set "straight up". OEM timing chains get sloppy after a while anyway. Yours has already been on there 20+ years. But, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Corey, It is not possible to tell whether you timing chain is retarded or not without degreeing the camshaft! I think you have the right answer "go for it". But if it ain't broke, you should not fix it!
