I have searched here and 1980-86 truck thread. So far I have found out I can pick up some more tq and hp by putting in a timing gear and chain from a eariler 460 pre 71? What would I set the timing once the new gear&chain in? Thanks
OTR: First, Deo Vindice! and Auster Resurgens!
Second, you merely need to line up the timing marks on the timing set.
The early timing sets were straight up, and gave good performance.
The later ones were re-designed so as to automatically retard the camshaft when the timing marks were lined up.
So when you install the new (earlier designed) timing gears and chain, the cam is re-advanced with respect to the crankshaft, and your engine will run much better.
So, just line up the timing marks on the gears and the camshaft - to crankshaft timing will be restored to proper performance.
Of course, your distributor timing will need to be re-set, as well, since it will be over-advanced after installing the replacement set.
Good luck!

I posted earlier if you buy a Cloyes Street TRUE roller chain set or many of the three keyway sets you have even more options. If you want TORQUE rather than speed you can set it ADVANCED of TDC 4 DEGREES, that will give you alot better Torque, I lost some speed but it still will turn 4400 RPM in high gear 3:55s and that is well over 100 MPH about 110 MPH. If you go the other way you will gain HP & Speed. This is all in the INSTURCTIONS that Cloyes furnishes with their sets. There maybe other companies that make these I have used CLOYES timing sets since the mid 60s.

Thanks for the great tip.I would rather have the torque and hopefully a little gas mileage.
I suppose it's been covered above, but I just installed a pre-'71 timing set in my '83 F250 with a 460, and I am very pleased with the increased throttle response, fuel economy and power in the RPM range I use: idle to 3,500 RPM
Basically, it simply moved the horsepower and torque peaks downward by about 600 RPM... it didn't actually yield more horsepower and torque overall, it just moved the power into a more useful RPM range.
You'll like it, unless you're in search of higher RPM power with the stock camshaft.

That's what I'm looking for is cheap mods that can give me what I'm looking for since it's a daily driver and with my 3.55 gear I hope it will help it.I really don't want to make alot of changes since I just bought the truck and want to see how it drives. Thanks
You're right! I never noticed that.
I wonder if the early sets were 0 and the later ones were -8 and Cloyes gave you the option of +4, 0, and -4. I'm not sure.
Anyone?
I haven't researched this but a "old school guy" I know that races in Phoenix & owns a parts house told me that the early 429 CJs & SCJs from the factory came with the crank gear notched to advanced 4 degrees beyond TDC. If Bill our Ford partsman chimes in he may be able to tell us if this is true or not. Since I believe he was a partsman for Ford in those days.
Everything I have read said that the cam was retarded 4 degrees, but that link said 8 and it really looked like 8 degrees. Which is it?
There's a picture of a three way a couple of pages back in a thread titled "Timing chain crank sprocket" It appears to be optional straight up, 4 deg. or 8 deg. retarded
