in reference to my previous post about the standard 6 cd stereo being lousy without audiophile i have now upgraded to it by purchasing a brand new audiophile radio head and subwoofer/amp from the ford radio repair people. total cost was about $650 including a trade credit for my old radio snd i feel that it was worth every nickle as the system now has mega bass. two things to note-i did not use the audiophile door speakers but the existing ones sound great and also the sub wiring was already in the truck and as mentioned in other posts was located under the carpet beneath the left rear seat close to the outboard seat belt. in my opinion it would be worth buying a lariat or fx4 regardless of price difference if good sound is important to you!!

Hey DartGuy....where did you go to get this setup? I called my dealer the other day, and I asked what it would cost to upgrade to the Audiophile system straight up, and his response was it cannot be done. I know that is a bunch of BS....I said, so you actually order a brand new truck from the factory if someone likes what you have, but just wants Audiophile added. What a dick this guy is. He is the "aftermarket/accessories" guy, and doesn't have a clue or care. Great dealer, lousy employee....
Anyway...I would be happy to pay $650 as opposed to buying a $1000 aftermarket head unit that is 2 DIN.
i like my audiophile just fine. i was hoping to not have to pay the $250 for it, but i really wanted the $850 sunroof and the only sunroof i found was the FX4 with the audiophile. oh well, i'm glad i have it now
hi dgoetz
i had to contact the radio people who go to the dealers to repair the radios for ford and they put me in touch with one of their techs, the sub and amp unit was ordered direct thru the dealers parts dept and was about $350. the radio head was purchased thru the radio repair co as the dealer would not handle them. cost was $500 but got a $200 trade credit for my non audiophile 6 disc.i do not know any part numbers but on ebay a seller (sound wave 40) lists the head units for sale with part numbers, if yours is an fx4 or lariat the harness should be under the carpet already for plug and play. if not research the forum on how to obtain the connectors to do this.(the easiest way to see if your truck has it is to pull the radio and see if the third plug is taped to the harness=if so you are in luck
sorry to ramble hope this helps

Thanks Jim...I guess I will have to find another dealer than my usual...those guys were absolutely clueless. By chance is the parts dealer that you go the audiohphile head unit online?
I have an FX4, and I have been behind the head unit a few times, but I do not recall the third plug. Not a big deal though. Installs are so easy in these trucks.
I could probably dig up a connector number in the service manual, but I've never seen an actual ford part number for these connectors (xx-xxxxxx-x). Thats not to say they don't exist...just never come across one.
I don't have the audiophile in my F150, but there is one in my Expy and my past Expy. As far as materials they don't compare well to a reasonable aftermarket sub. The one is my '01 Expy died a pretty quick death. The one in my '06 Expy is currently controlled by my 3 year old...it should last until she gets into intermediate school at this rate.
I hear a lot of people who say "you're better off going after-market"..."audiophile isn't all that great"...
Well I'll tell you what, my audiophile sounds great..and I have gotten more compliments and impressed passengers than you can shake a stick at.
Now I heard awhile ago, that using the aux jack of the radio sounds better because it has no internal limiter on it, unlike the FM and CD portion of the radio. Supposedly this was so when watching a DVD thru the AUX on the radio, you were able to hear the dynamics of the movie. I have found that my ipod and XM (both of which play thru my aux jack) sound amazing. The bass sometimes rattles the fillings out of my teeth and the highs probably hit ranges only dogs hear sometimes. I don't notice the same dynamics though while listening to CD or FM.
I think this audiophile system has way more potential then the head unit allows, because everything through my aux port sounds great.
It's good to hear a positive report from a satisfied customer. Music is in the ear of the listener and if it works and sounds great no need to fix it. Unfortunately, after converting my '01 Expy over to all JL audio component setup and parametric EQ, Dave Matthews Band and John Coltrane never sounded so good. When I got the '06 Expy Audiophile and the Premium in my '06 F150, while the stock systems might be good they just don't offer the dynamic range and sound customization I'm looking for. Just my 2 cents, like I said if it puts a smile on your face you can't go wrong.
