I'm contemplating installing scavengers on my '55 F-100. What I refer to as "scavengers" were the hot item back in my hight school days. My truck has quite a rake and I think they'd look good on it. Scavengers are hung parallel to the ground and pass under the rear axle and usually stop just behind the rear axle...usuall with flared tips. Right now my pipes hug the bed bottom and go up over the rear axle and then dip back down and come up right below the rear bumper. Want to solicit ideas, comments, etc., regarding this proposed setup. Thanks/Bob.
I sure did like the look in the 60's. Had em on my 55 Conv. I think they look best on something with a strong rake. I hope that if you do it, you can post some pics. Joe
I tried to find a good picture of scavengers and finally found a little tiny one. On the internet, go to "www.cougartown.com/graphics/rake.gif:. It shows a '55 or '56 Chevy (sorry!!) with scavenger pipes. That should give you some idea of what I'm talking about. My truck has about that same rake.
That's not much rake for scavengers. They must be hung far enough below the axle to allow for the full suspension travel but high enough to not be ripped off by hitting every bottle cap in the road. In the 60's the rake would have been more than twice what you have, high enough so that someone driving behind you could see all the way to the bottom of the front bumper. If you want true period look, don't forget to paint the bottom of the bed and floorboards red! Around my way they were often made from early Ford rear axle torque tubes since they tapered the full length and were heavy enough to survive being dragged over speed bumps and steep driveway approaches.
How about a set of lakes pipes under the running boards instead?
how about a set of lakes pipes instead of the running boards?that's what i would like to try.sure would be a shame to not install my new fiberglass boards though.anyone got good lakes pipes to trade for running boards?
I also like what Randy Jack did bringing the pipes out through the rear edge of his boards. I think that would look great on my panel, but I have my heart set on putting on a flame thrower setup...
