Difference between 360 and 361

I have a 68 Ranger that had a 361 sticker on my air cleaner before I repainted it. It looks just like a typical 360 or 390 air cleaner sticker. Were there any differences between the two 360/361??? Also, on my glove box a ranger emblem is on it but its not the typical square small writing one you see in the parts catalog. It is a big chrome (RANGER). I cannot seem to find it in any parts catalog.. I will shoot a picture if no one knows.

the 360 was used in pickups. the 361 is a heavy duty motor that was use in the bigger trucks like the F600. as for the emblem it sounds like some previous owner put a ranger emblem from the bed on the glove box.

So, there are mechanical differences?? How do I know if it is a true 361??? it was my grandparents truck and has the original motor in it, never rebuilt. The glove box emblem is not the one that in on my bed. I have never seen it on any other truck but it fits like it meant to be there, no jerry riggin. I will get a picture and post it next week if no one comes up with anything...

The 361 used a forged steel crank. Look for the parting line running down the crank from the mold for a 360 nodular iron crank. The forged steel have no parting line. Some forged cranks have a $ symbol on the edge of the counterweight. This is the trademark symbol for Wyman Gordon who forged many of Fords cranks. Also the 361 crank should have a larger snout dia than the std FE cranks. The crank ID numbers might give you some idea as both have a 3.50 stroke and 4.05 bore....G.

it sounds like the air cleaner has just been swaped at one time. that truck may have had a oil bath air cleaner. the ranger emblem on the glovebox most likely came form a 73-79 ford truck.

if it was a 361 it would have the motor mounts right in the front of the motor, instead of half way to the back of the block.......if the mounts R half way, than it's a 360....I think neways....could be wrong though

i had a similar question, my motor mounts are only bolted on the front mount holes of the engine otherwise the monts sit to far back to line up, and the block has what look to be 4 verticle 1/2 wide lines . I am just getting to do the engine work and dont remember seeing the lines on another 390 i was looking at. Not original engine in truck . a newbie fe question i am sure
