radio blank display

The '89 has a a factory stereo cassette combo. It works great, but I have no display. Is this common? Anybody know how to fix this, besides a swapout. Kinda cool to have the factory unit, and I still do have alot of cassettes!

Do you happen to remember what had to come off to get to it?? or is one of those "look for your kid with the smallest hands" and reach way around jobs!

Thumbs up

take the screws out of the side of the radio for the top, then you shpuld see where the front of the radio is, should be a bulb right in there

Very simple to do, the sheet metal panel on top of the radio just snaps on and off, remove it and you'll see a white pyramid shaped bulb socket holder, twist the black bulb socket carefully about a sixteenth couter clockwise, I use hobby needle nose pliers to do this but BE GENTLE! The socket pulls out easily after you've turned it, the bulb just pulls out of the socket. It is Ford part number: FODF 13465-BA, this is the correct bulb as it is frosted to reduce glare, you can also use #37 or #24 miniture bubs but these will be brighter then the rest of your instrument illumination. There are other ways to change the bulb such as taking the ***** and face plate off but that is way too hard and risky too. I changed 4 bulbs easily the way I described with no problems. Hope this helps. Fleet Bronco

Thanks.
Bronco is at the end of the parking lot now, so I can't check it out just yet. Seems like above it is the vent on the right and a filler blank on the left, where automatic 4 wheel drive buttons would go.

I had same problem with 86 BII. Could not find the bulbs - so I bought a replacement on Ebay.
However, once you get the radio out of the car....you have to remove the faceplate from the radio itself. You need to remove all the ***** from the front and then undo these little screws. Once done be CAREFUL not to pull the faceplate back to far as there is a flex cable that links the faceplate to the radio and it will break if you look at it funny.

There is a TECH ARTICLE here that I wrote, tells you what bulb you need and everything.. I'll post a link in a bit.

<a href="https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/idx/8/167/article/How_to_replace_the_backlight_bulb_in_a_1992_Ford_D IN_style_radio.html" target= new>Link!</a>

It says for a 1992, but it's the same radio from 1986 to 1993 or 94.

Thanks for the article with pictures link. Now what everyone has been telling me makes more sense.
My fault, I didn't make it clear, that I also need to know how to get the whole unit out.

Yeah gotta take the radio out, did I mention that? That's easy too, Just pull the dash facia trim piece off, think there are 3 or 4 screws up around the top of the facia and a couple of snap fit retainers on the bottom, carefully pull the bottom out after taking out the top screws. The radio is held in with 2 screws on each side on the front of it, you'll see them, remove them and pull the radio out far enough to unplug the 2 wire harnesses plugged in the back, there is a tab you need to press in that locks the plug into the radio, you'll see it, both plugs have that locking tab, pull the antenna plug out and the radio will come right out, it really is easy and believe me it's a lot easier and less risky to pull the top cover off the radio and replace the bub from inside then to take all the ***** and faceplate off, I've done it 4 times and it's a snap.

Our 88 Bronco II also had the radio display go out, and it is indeed the bulb. It think its only a 50 cent bulb too.

thanks

Fleet Bronco,

Thanks for the detailed answer. I have got to try it tonight!
By the number of times people have said they replaced this bulb, it looks like I will become and "expert" at it too, as time goes on.

Hey Ruddy, you probably got the radio all lit up by now, if you have any more questions about it I'll be glad to share my knowledge. I've got a couple 87 Bronco2's, a 90 full size Bronco, an 87 Mustang CHP 5.0 and my sister has an 89 Mustang LX 5.0 convertible they all have basically the same Ford radio and they all had the backlight bulb replaced.
I'll tell you what's an awful job on the fuel injected Bronco2 and that's replacing the EGR to exhaust manifold tube, I had to do that to get my B2 to pass the smog ****'s test out here in California. Anyone needing info on that procedure I'll detail it.

Fleet Bronco,
I thought I was going to do the light last night, but my wife and went to go look at some Chocolate Lab puppies instead. 6 Chocolates, 1 yellow, 1 black, all knuckleheads!
This weekend for sure. I also ordered some front rotors, since the current one are warped. Amazingly, they came in 1 day, with just regular ground UPS.
I'm in California too, but luckily it passed smog and was way below the required numbers. So far I have washed/waxed it, replaced the rear end gasket (plastic cover!), taken the seats out to swap the foam, springs and wash the covers(much nicer). I only put back the drivers seat, cuz I still want to take out the carpet and really scrub it.
Sounds like you are a real Bronco/Ford fan! A while back, I was pretty agnostic, having always owned late 60's, early 70's Volvos. When my Uncle died, I got his '70 F250 Camper special, which now has a transplanted 460 in it. Fixed up a '66 Mustang for/with my Son and now have this '89 Bronco II. My dream future retirement project is to fix up a 66-67 Fairlane Hardtop.
