I'm having a strange problem with my Ranger...there's a rattle when I step on the gas, it's much worse when the humidity is low, when it rains though, it runs normally. I wondering if it could be a gasket that has been exposed to the weather, something that was lubricated & sealed? Wild guess on my part...
It's a 1999 4 x 4
With a
3.0 L FFV V6 engine
regular cab
Is your motor pinging? Have you changed your spark plugs or checked them out to see how they look lately? I have a slight rattle when I push in the pedal sometimes, but it's not very loud. Is yours pretty loud?

I didn't think of that...I'll check that too. It's not very loud unless I'm really stepping on it, usually going uphill.
Be careful with using premium gas though... if you get some and it takes care of the rattle, great. You can assume the rattle isn't a big problem and go back to regular. But if your Ranger manual says to use 87, stick to 87 and ignore the rattle. Using higher-than-recommended octane can cause some pretty nasty build-up on your engine components over time. That, and it costs more without providing substantial benefit.
I changed my sparkplugs around 70K miles I think. Use something other than Bosch Platinum though. That's what I used and everyone I talked to about it said they're sub-par. Of course, this is AFTER I bought them, but hey... if it bothered me that much I'd replace them again, right?
Had a similar problem (see the link I put in my last post above) and the garage reprogrammed the PCM to the latest upgrade. No more rattle/pinging now and it was covered under the warranty so no charge either.

Yes, I read in the small manual that came with it that I should only use 87, so I guess I'll stick to it now(it's not payday so I haven't filled it up yet)...I'm kinda desperate for a solution.....It does have over 70,000 miles on it, I'll check the sparkplugs next....

Thanks for the info - I'll try it if the sparkplugs don't prove to be the problem - (basically I'm going to go for the cheapest solution as I'm stingy) If I'm not being too inquisitive, How much did it cost for the upgrade?
Since my truck is still under warranty, it didn't cost me a thing. No clue what it might cost otherwise, but maybe call ahead and get some estimates around town?
