Rattle in a Ranger

I have a 2004 Ranger Edge, 4 liter V6 4x4, with just over 15k miles. It has done a little off and rough road usage in the Adirondack mountains but assume that the majority of those miles are highway/city. Just recently, when I hit about 2000rpm or so, I hear a quiet rattle. I've had a passenger listen for it and it seems to come from under the driver side floorboards, right about under the pedals. It gets louder if I press the accelerator harder or if I'm going up at least 5-10 degree incline and more (so, not much, but just enough).

Anyone have a clue to what might be happening? I'll be the first to admit that I really don't know much about cars, so assume I'm an idiot.

What you described sounds like pinging. To verify that's what it is, try running a tank of premium gas, to see if the "rattle" goes away, or is minimized.

I have a 2004 Edge 4x4 4.0L 4.10 and I have the same thing from time to time that is engine ping. I agree, if you can afford a tank of mid grade or premium gas run one through and see if that helps for a bit. I changed to Chevron Gas with mine and it reduced the ping factor with mine

Sorry to sound like an idiot, but what exactly is pinging? Just filled up last night, but I'll try a higher grade fuel at next fill up. Thanks.

If you are running too low of an octane you will get pinging. Pinging is also know as detonation. The mixture is igniting all at once (spark occurs to early in the cycle). This is hard on the internal components you should look at a fuel additive to boost the octane level since you just filled up.

I could be wrong, but I thought a factory 4.0L S.O.H.C. was tuned to run on 87 octane period, and the only time you should run a higher octane gasoline is if you have the proper chip installed.
I have a 2003 4.0L S.O.H.C. with 28,000 miles, it has burned 87 octane from day one with plenty of power and no pinging problems yet.
At 15,000 miles you are still under full warranty, don't mess around take it in and see what's up. Regular gas cost enough, why would you want to pay more for premium.

Another good point about the warranty. Since I'm doing an oil change and tire rotation, may as well have them take a peek.

I didn’t realize that you were still covered under warranty. You definitely need to have the dealer look at it. Your truck should run perfectly on 87 octane if it wasn’t modified.

Please let us know what you find out. I have the same problem with my 01. The dealer reprogramed the pcm and the problem is still there. No codes either.

My 2002 3.0 5spd has never had a pinging problem, but i've used shell or chevron gas in it since day and never stray from that. I also dump a bottle of injector cleaner in every 3k when i change the oil, and clean the mass airflow sensor and K&N every 6 months. My freind has a 2003 3.0 auto that was pinging and had an overall lack of performance. I told him to use nothing but shell or chevron 87 and the pinging wasn't as bad but it still did it. I cleaned the mass airflow sensor and reset the computer and drove his truck for about 30 minutes in a semi agressive manor which isn't how he drives and the problem is fixed. He lives about a block from the beach so the mass air flow had a little corossion on it and he putted around like a grandma when he first got the truck so when he wanted to get on it a little the adaptive computer wasnt used to the driving style. thats just my theory.

You guys were right. Turns out the sound WAS the engine pinging. Guy at the garage also stated that it was good that I didn't put in a higher grade fuel as it may have voided my warranty. He wasn't sure about that, but that's what he thought. And since I only have 15k on the truck, the fix was covered by said warranty so everything's cool now. According to my receipt, this is what they did: "Reprogram PCM to latest calibration as per TSB 5-5-09." No clue what that last part (TSB 5-5-09) is... anyone know? At any rate, I drove it around tonight to try and replicate the sound but everything sounds great. Thanks for your help, guys!

TSB 5-5-09 is a technical service bulletin so you were not the only one to have this problem as ford has addressed it in the past.
