My 2001 4.0 SOHC Ranger is stalling when I put it in park. It is not all the time maybe 75% and usually when the a/c is on. What basically happens is I will come to a stop, put it in to park and the rpm's will drop real low and it will either die or will idle back up and sit perfectly fine. Basically if it stalls it will happen the moment i hit park on the stalk. Otherwise it will rev down real low and then back to normal and sit fine.
I did have a vaccuum leak that took me a few weeks to actually find a fix. It was causing stalls and rough idles, but since fixing that the truck runs perfect except when I put it into park. Any help please?
Sorry if it's hard to understand I tried to explain it best I could!
You might want to check out the technical info thread on the top of this forum. Click on the 4.0 Idle Air Control Valve link, that might be your problem. Either way it's a good read.
If you didn't reset the computer after fixing the vacuum leak, the computer is still using it's old idle logic it learned WITH the vacuum leak, so it needs to relearn things as Ken has suggested.
You didn't relate what the vacuum leak fix was, but if it was a loose or dryrotted vacuum hose, that you just trimmed off & stuck back on, it mght have split or come loose again, or come off.
We have a tendency to do that, rather than replacing the hose as we should!!!! I know better but, am guilty of it on my 94 Taurus!!!!
The IAC sounds like a good suspect too, as Irishguy has suggested, if the above doesn't pan out.
If none of the above yields a solution, I'd have the computer scanned for pending codes, as that may offer up a helpful clue.
