I was just given a 1987 ford ranger extended cab, body is in good shape. It has a 2.9, automatic tranny (floor shift) and 2wd. The tranny is trashed.
Ive been trying to find an A4LD for the past month with not luck.
How much of a pain is it to convert to a 5 speed and which type of tranny will bolt up?
A Ranger trans with the code FM146 (or similar) made by Mitsubishi will bolt right up to your 2.9L, as long as it came from a 2.9L.
It will be a BIG pain to do it, but it can be done. Your best bet would be to find a wrecked Ranger of similar year and use as a donor. Or one with cracked heads like the 2.9L is **** to doing when it overheats.
