John and Gasser got in a conversation about this subject and while they are deciding who posts the question I thought I would. This is a interesting subject. So to start the ball rolling;
I have a 66 F100 short wheel base, style side with a 390 ci, C6, Power steering and brakes, air conditioning. The truck has an edelbrock 1405 carburetor, pertronix ignition, big cap with 8mm wires, cast iron manifolds and dual exhaust. This truck is basically a pile of new or rebuilt parts that are driven daily. I put about 12,000 miles a year on my old bug. Future plans call for more new or rebuilt parts and when I retire in 6 years I'll do a frame off. This truck will not be a show truck as long as I own it. My commute is actually a fun experience because I really enjoy driving this truck.

LAST EDITED ON 01-May-01 AT 03:23 AM (EST)[p]Two trucks for the time being.
#1 - 1988 F-150 swb, 300 straight six to 302 conversion. 5 Speed transmission, custom exhaust from the engine back (will set of car alarms in a parking lot!) Emergency vehicle lighting equipment listed below. Other than that nothing really special
#2 - my hotrod! 1965 F-100, lowered in the front, stock height in the back (roadster stance,) F-100 SWB, fleetside, 390 C6, dual exhaust, pertronix (best money I've spent yet,) 1965 Texas truck plates (running legally,) just picked up an aluminum grille for it for $150, all original grille not repro!
Other than that, my 65 gets a lot better gas mileage than my 88 hands down!
88 F-150 gets 13-15 (15 on a good day)
65 F-100 gets 17-19 (strange for a big block?) (that's also when I can manage to keep my foot out of it!)
You can see both of my trucks below. But I'm getting ready to sell the gray one. I just don't need two trucks. And on top of that, I've found a convertible 5.0 Mustang that I want!
1988 F-150, SWB, 5.0 EFI (formerly 4.9 EFI), M5OD 5 speed, 3.08 gears, Summit shorty truck headers, Custom built Flowmaster exhaust system. Force 4 LP6000 lightbar, Federal signal PA-300 100 watt siren, Icom IC-V100 50 watt mobile radio.
=======================================
1965 F-100 (just purchased 1/18/01), SWB, 390, C-6 auto. Dual exhaust, Not much else to do to it.
I have a '70 F-250 with 360/C-6 in it. Nothing fancy..yet.
I plan to put a 400m into it, that I got free. The 400 runs really strong. It will probaly stay until I've got enough money to put a big block in it. But thats after I get the rest of the truck into shape. Being a kid with a family it maybe awhile. I'll will probaly put some rims and tires on soon to.
hilander! Wait a minute! keep the 360 and make it a 390 when you can afford to. Sell the 400 and buy some nice late model Ford rims and radials. Puting in a 400 will be a lot of work and expense.

Droping the 400 into the truck shouln't be too much trouble. From what I understand, you just get the perches from a 77-79 truck, check the sump on the oil pan, and drive shaft length, and away you go. Besides the 360 is worn out, and the parts are more expensive. When I go to the 460, I'll already have the tranny. I hear it already, "don't goto the 460" "to much trouble and cost." But I ran a mild 460 setup,barely more than stock, on a computer dyno, and the thing ran 505 ftlbs of torque! That sure as snot made my heart skip a beat! Using a 4bbl and headers, alittle pocket porting on the heads and you have 500+ftlbs of torque at 2000rpm. Now thats a truck motor.
I'm runnin a 77 F250 Highboy Custom, 400m, C-6, Power assist steering, Radio delete, I bought the truck about a year ago, from our Volunteer Fire Dept. It was used as our Weed Fire truck.
The only things I have done to it so far, are new 33"x 12.5 x 16.5 Generals and 9.75 x 16.5 alloys. That really smoothed out the ride, since it had the split rims and Bias ply snows on it. Put new dual exaust on too.
The truck just turned 13,000 miles last week. Bright red paint with a black roof. It gets a lot of attention because most Highboys are pretty beat up by now.
Any idea what it might be worth? My insurance won't even sell me Comp. coverage cause it's too old.

hilander, William is trying to give a kid with a family some sound and fatherly advive. SELL the 400, take the money and buy a the crank and piston set for a 390, add the other money that you will spend for the new tranny and other conversions and rebuild the 360. You will have a much better engine and all of the power that you will ever need.;-)
