I am about to get my truck back from the shop and was just wondering what type (number) of flowmaster muffler do I need for it to sound great but not to loud to wake the neighbors when I come home at night? I want to be able to hear the deep rumble inside the cab but not to loud where I have to yell at my passenger when we talk.
Any help would be appreciated.
FYI... right now it only has headers only and wanting to run duals out to the rear bumper.
As long as you have tailpipes out the back...any version will be pretty good. I would bet you want the 3 chamber model at least. The 2 chamber are pretty loud, plus interior resonance is worse depending on where you mount the muffler.
Never had a set of these newer "delta" flow. Not sure how much quieter they are?
50 series are 3 chamber, 40 series are 2 chamber. Fewer chambers, the louder. Delta-flows are a little quieter yet, but they cost about 30 bucks a piece more.
I have the 40 series delta flows, and they are awesome. I run pipes out the back, so its not so loud for me, but the ricer BEHIND me may not like em...
They are only "loud" when you get into them, so coming home late at night if you are easy on the gas wont be an issue for your neighbors.
I never liked the sound of Flowmasters no matter how they were arranged.
I went with Magnaflows. Better sound, I think, not as obnoxious as Flowmasters
I agree with you RUSS glass packs are cheap, you get what you pay for.
I think that I will go with the 40 series delta flow.
Now my question is what piping do I need for the muffler ie single in single out or what? I'm trying to get the mufflers online at a cheaper price than what the garage that's putting my pipes on are selling theres for.
I have found several places online that has lots of flowmasters at resonable prices with free shipping. But I'm cunfused in which ones I need for my Short Bed truck. I was thinking SINGLE IN AND SINGLE OUT would that be the right one?
That's what I have on my s/b. Fits up under the bed floor really well, then over axle and out sides looking kinda "stock"..LOL!! (like 2 1/2" pipes are stock).

I agree, I like the sound of the Magnaflows on my FE much more than the Flowmasters.
for your deltaflows, get single/offset input and single/center output, i found that it keeps the pipes a little closer to the frame which makes it nicer when you need to do tranny work.
flowmaster website used to have a sound chart you could look at to decide what sound levels you wanted for interior/exterior noise levels. Also, the bigger the pipes, the deeper the sound. i also installed 18" chrome tips (3 & 1/2") out the back. Everybody says it sounds awesome. driving up 4 levels of my work parking garage i can usually set off about 6-8 car alarms if I get on the gas a little. hehe
I have the flowmaster 70 series, and i love it. Im running try-y headers, 2 1/2 collectors, into a 2 1/2"-3" merge collector, then to the 3" 70 series, and a mandrel bent 3" tail pipe all the way out dumping behind the right rear tire. At idle, walk 30ft away and you cant hear the truck running, when you rev it, its a mean sound, but to to loud. When i leave for work in the morning, 1000 rpm and nobody knows im leaving. When cruising, you hear just a mellow flowmaster bark of the motor, when i drive by a wall, i can really hear it and down the highway its dead silent. when i get on it, i hear the intake more than the exhaust. It is a known fact that a flowmaster does not work properly without a tailpipe. The flowmaster sound clips are a joke. I belive the next step louder than the 70 is the 50 series, 70 is the quietest. To me 40 not right unless you got a mean cam. If you want to be loud you better have the motor to back it up.
I have (2)40 seriers delta flows on my 302(Fox Mustang coupe) with a very aggressive cam, long tubes and 2-1/2" dual exhaust... it is loud... loud loud loud... but does not resonate/drone. It is as loud at idle as my truck at 55-60mph... standing beside it at idle requires quite a voice to be heard.
You have to really raise you voice around town, and on the freeway... forget it, there is to be no conversation... The car is a w/e strip toy and sounds the part.
If you have a wild cam, the 40's may be more than you want.
My 390 F250 has mild cam(comp 268) stock exhaust manifolds, singe 3" exhaust out behind the rear tire and one MagnaFlo... it is loud. Sitting idle'n out front of the house you can hear it plain as day with all the doors/windows closed in the house... around town requires raised voices, but, not too bad... at freeway speeds(70mph) you have to yell, but can get your point across.
If I were to re-do the exhaust on the truck ($$$) I'd go with something more quiet.
When i had my dual Flows installed, I was thinking about 3" pipe. But having to bend that size pipe around my 4 wheel drive stuff, would make the metal in the sharp bends too thin, the pipe guy said. Anybody had this done with 3"? so i went with the 2 1/2" and he was able to keep everything above the crossmember, although the left side has to make a couple of tight turns.
