Service Code 741 what could it mean?

Service Code 741 what could it mean?
I have a 97 explorer 4.0 sohc, 2wd, O/D light is flashing, (indicating a transmission issue). Had a ford mechanic read the code.
He said it shows 741 and could be several different things that cause this code. I have not had a chance to let him have it for repair.
Any suggestions?
Symptoms: truck runs fine....every once in a while...very intermittedly...this o/d light starts flashing...truck then shifts very hard but seems to run fine once the tranny go through gears.
When the o/d light not flashing everything seens normal.
If you disconnect the negitive battery cable and reconnect.... the o/d flashing goes away. It may go for a week in all kinds of driving conditions...then it will come on again and may stay on for a day or so then may go away without removing the battery cable. I am afraid this will only get worse with time.

Just gave truck to college son out of town and need to make sure that this will not strand him.

P-0741 is "Torque convertor clutch system improper mechanical performance."
The convertor clutch locks at about 40 MPH to prevent slippage & at idle it is unlocked to permit idling in gear.
Sounds like it needs a new lockup solenoid.

I only drive manuals, so I dont know much about the silly automatics.
But if the lockup solenoid is the problem I think it's a simple swap.
Take a look at www.autozone.com, enter the info for the Explorer and you should be able to find online instructions for swapping it.
