My steering went out so we replaced the Steering Pump and the Gear Box. It didn't help so we exchanged the Gear Box, and it still didn't work. It steers a little now. But it still makes a grinding noise (as when you run out of fluid). And unless it is jacked up, you can barely turn the wheels. Any Ideas on what we have done wrong? I really miss driving my baby. Thanks
Amberlyn
you either got a bad pump or you havent gotten all the air out of it. jack the truck up and put it on stands, start the truck and turn the wheels all the way one direction and hold it there for a minute. then turn the wheel all the way the other way and hold for a minute, check the fluid, and let the truck down. this will bleed all the air out of the system. should work now, if it doesnt either the pump is bad or the gear is bad. hope this helps.
We bled the system and still have nothing. I think we are going to check into a new pump because it is making funny noises. If that doesn't fix it, I think I amy cry
Something is binding. I would pull off the linkage at the pitman arm and see if you can turn the tires by hand from stop to stop. They should move fairly easily. Then try the steering wheel to see if it moves without binding. There is a procedure in the shop manual for adjusting the gear box mesh load. Do not adjust the screw on the top of the box without following the manual. You can get it too tight and you won't know it. Let us know what you find.
Here is a new twist to my steering issues. If you run the RPMs real high it works perfectly! At idle or low RPMs I have nothing still. We are going to try another steering pump as some one told me it possibley doesn't have anough ummppphh to get the hydro fluid going. I have no clue.
Well my husband got a new pump, and put it in. WHile turning the wheel to get the fluid running...... something exploded. Back to square one,.......
heeeelllllllppppppppp!!!!!!!!!!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Jul-02 AT 02:09 PM (EST)]I guess it was the pump burnt up. And now there is a big mess in my motor compartment. I don't know what the next steps is besides talking to Schucks to see if we can still return the pump. Then I think maybe the salvage yard. My husband says time to take it into a shop cause otherwise you all will be able to see my beauty in the classifieds. BTW, she is shiny black, with an excellant purple flame job. I will try to get a picture posted so you can see. Is there a difference between a steering pump for a 75' 302 and a 76' 351w? As the pumps we have been getting are for a 75' 302, and we are thinking maybe this could be the problem since we have the 351w in the truck.
Good point. Probably not the pump, but could be the pulley you are using. Something popped? Doesn't sound good. It's tough dealing with rebuilt parts...they're only as good as the person doing the actual rebuild work (usually someone underskilled & underpaid). Best of luck.
I have used Ford pumps on a Toyota gearbox, GM pumps on a Ford gearbox, never had any problems. Something blowing up says excessive pressure. I still think something is binding up in the linkage or the gearbox.
I had the pump go out on a 69 and when it did it sent junk into the hose and clogged it up when I put the new pump on it blew the hose apart and that is how we found where the clog was. Before it blew it would only turn with high rpms.
This is more a Mopar problem then a Ford...It may not even work but its worth a looksee....See if the engine it rotating in proper rotation according to specs.
