I would highly recomend the use of full synthetic motor oils, I have run castrol syntec in my remanufactured 302 long block since original start up, engine has 65k on it, burns no oil at all, and is very quiet, and when I replaced the valve cover gaskets recently the inside was spotless, I say go for it & use the synthetic!!!!
I wouldn't put the snythetic in until the 1st oil change after the break-in period. It would just be a waste as the first oil in there would contain a bunch of rebuild junk.

Yea, I've heard all the bull about not using synthetic oils on the first start up for lots of reasons, some say the rings won't seat, some say things about the machine shop junk, I personally think that if you are going to use synthetic oil in a fresh engine then use it from the start and you won't be sorry!
Dennis is correct about not running it during your break in period. I've done extensive research on this for my Ducati and every mechanic (including the factory) has said that running synthetics on a fresh motor isn't the best thing for it. You'll get blow by around the rings as well as your seals won't seat correctly. If you've ever poured synthetic oil of the same viscosity as standard dino-oil, you'll notice that the synthetic seems a lot thinner. If it were my truck, I'd put 7k on the motor before turning to full synthetics.
Good Lord, I am not trying to sell anyone on any one particular brand of motor oil, I just gave my opinion, and related my results and experiance with MY engine, to each his own!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amen Supercab! Just so you know, I wasn't posting against your post, buddy. In fact, when I asked this question in my Ducati mailing list, the first reply was, "Here we go again". Everybody has their own feelings on the matter and I was simply posting what I learned from my inquiry. After 2 weeks of reading and research, I came to my own conclusion that a standard oil break in is best. Hopefully, the original poster will read the complete thread and come to his own conclusions. Perhaps even take your advice!
I have decided on what oil to use. I am going with a Valvoline 10w-40 and thats what Im going to stick with as long as I own the vehicle. Thanks for all the feedback guys.
