Unhappy code P0406

my 2002 ford f150 (4.6L) check engine light went on and a friend of mine checked it with his OBDII, code P0406 (exhaust gas recirculation sensor A circuit high) went to ford dealer and was told two different problems: first guy said it's my DPFE sensor and the other guy said it's the EGR valve now i'm very confused don't know were to start... would really appreciate for any help... tnx much

how many miles do you have, if its under 60,000 ford should replace the DPFE for free under recall 02M01. I'm sure that is the problem.

The DPFE sensor measure a pressure drop across the EGR metering. That is why it could be either part. It shouldn't be both.

You should make sure that both hoses are connected to your DPFE. Since it is measuring high, I would guess that the reference pressure which is connected to the low pressure(down stream) side of the sensor would be the one that is disconnected. This should however set an additional code. You only have one right? Downstream disconnect code is 1405 I believe.

If you still have access to your friends OBDII checker, you might try taking the hoses off the DPFE in various combinations to see if different errors are indicated. For example, if you took off the up stream sensor, you should read a low condition instead of your current high.

If your DPFE sensor is ok, a high reading would indicate that the EGR is not opening and this causes the delta pressure to be too high.

The recall states that the dealership will cover the DPFE(9j460) under the recall for the stated amount of time which is an additional 24 months or 24,000 mile after the factory warranty. there must be a code P0401, P0402, P1400, P1401 for the recall to be effective. If it were me I would replace it for you anywayse, but your local dealer may not, so to create a P0401 in memory, first clear the existing code, by using a scanner or disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. then disconnect the vacuum line that goes to the EGR valve and drive your truck, soon the check engine light will come on with a code P0401 (insuffecent EGR flow detected), simply replace the vacuum line and head to the dealership. But if you would like, give me your VIN # first and I'll make sure you hav teh recall on your truck.
