I have a 79 f-150 that the transfer case leaks at the front and rear output's. I have replaced both seals, but the leaks have came back some 6 months later. Are there bearings behind the seals that are removable without taking the transfer cases out of the truck? Thanks for your idea's!!!!!!!!!
Sure there are bearings behind the seals. At least there should be. If there are none then you have found your problem!
Seriously, what did the yoke seal surface look like when you replaced the seals the last time? If the xfer case had no lube then sand and dirt would case a fragged seal and yoke. If lube and yoke are Ok then very worn bearings can be the culprit. If you can move the yoke up and down then the bearings are fragged.
If the driveshafts are way out of balance or mis-clocked, then vibrations will frag bearings and seals.
Make sure the seals are installed in the correct direction. This is usually done correctly because it is very difficult to press them in backwards.
Do you drive in sand? water? Where is your vent tube? High? When you drain your case does water come out? There are too many questions for a proper diagnosis.
If you decide to go thru the xfer case and want a good seals and bearings kit call 4X heaven---518-725-1203>>>they sell areal nice kit plus you can order any other parts from them that you may need!!!fd :-X11
cThe shafts all look good, no grooves or scrapes. The front drive shaft has benn rebuilt and the back has good u-joints in it. The seals helped for awhile last time. I will try it again, this time looking harder at the shafts and look for any play in them. The truck hasn't been in water or sand, it's used as a daily driver and 4WD when the snow flies here in the midwest. Thanks For your HELP!!!!!!
