The 3sp/OD fetch a pretty good price on ebay. I recently watched one sell for $371.09. They're around but they're getting scarce and expensive.
I think I've heard about regular Ford T85 transmissions being adapted with parts from other makes of vehicles, i.e. taking the R10 OD and output shaft off of a Studebaker T85 and putting it onto a Ford T85.
I think any truck 3 spd from mid 50's to 1964 will work, input shaft and diameter changed in 65...so you could use a light duty, medium duty, or overdrive which will require a shorter driveshaft and some wiring..thats what I did...the mid 60's all syncro top loader is a good trans to use..may require a different driveshat yoke, can't remember
Thanks, I am searching for a 3 speed OD, but for now I found a 3 speed and the column shift linkage, and hopefully I can negotiate a fair price and then later look at the OD. I saw somewhere someone said he bought a car 3 speed OD and put the OD on his 3 speed, because only the input shafts are different. I may get bold and try that when the time comes. First need to get a truck.
I think you can use a pass car trans and just switch input shafts from what I've heard, never tried it myself..OD's are getting hard to find, took me quite awhile, but I sure love it, lets my 223 six cruise at 65-70 and get 20mpg
I recently did the car trans/OD with the truck MDG change and just installed it in my '53 chassis Fri afternoon. I too want to keep the 'three on the tree' and had to change over the truck side cover to hook up the clutch pedal shaft. When I tried to hook the shaft, 'u' shaped clutch bell crank ( i don't know what it's called, the clutch linkage to the throw out arm part that is threaded to adjust the free play ) I noticed that this 'u' shaped bent steel peice will hit the solenoid. So, I will make the upright arms of the'u' 1-1/2" closer together and get a longer bolt and spacer and it should be good. One other thing, you would have to machine some precise holes in a non OD 3 speed case to adapt a 10R OD unit to it. This is for the anti-reverse rod, it gets pushed back by the first/reverse shift cam from an OD side cover (the regular 3 speed shift cam doesn't have as big a 'shoulder'). Cheers.
Okay. My 1960 F-100 has the 223 ... and I have an overdrive transmission in my garage that is out of a car. Is it possible to make this transmission work without swapping out the input shaft?
How about just mating a car clutch to the car input shaft? Should work if lengths of the two shafts are the same. Dont know about the throwout bearing, but someone put a truck input shaft and throwout on my car 3 speed, then put it behind a truck, so the reverse may work. Maybe give Mummert a call, and make sure to buy the clutch from him if he takes the time to assist.
the car trans input shaft is shorter than the truck and won't reach in to the pilot bearing, so just changing the clutch plate doesn't work.. and the throwout bearing collar is also smaller on the car trans, so you can't use the truck bearing on it, and a car throwout won't work on a truck fork, so the only way to do it is change the input shaft to the truck type...

there's a company that makes external overdrive units, I think gear vendors is the name of the place. That guy stacey on Trucks did his copperhead truck with one of their units. I looked at them until I found a price, 2300 bucks. Sorry I don't hove that kinda money.
I'm in the process of changing a 1954 3-speed out for a 64 3-speed. All is same except the output shaft and a couple inches longer. I got it cheap on ebay because seller made a mistake on add (no reserve). I've already shortened the driveshaft and changed yolk to fit and now found out the trans has pitted shafts due to water in it sometime in the past. Gonna have to rebuild it.
My point is...it can work but look into the new trans carefully before you write the check.
