I've seen ppl ask if there is anyway test a GEM but I can't seem to find the answer. I just bought a 1999 F450 at an auction and on the drive home I realized the horn, cruise, wipers and washer don't work. The cruise and horn I figured was caused by the clock spring and the wiper/washer was probably the multi-function switch. I'm lucky because I haven't sold my 2000 F250 yet and I started swaping parts to see what worked and what didn't.
The wiper motor works just fine as does the washer pump and multi-fuction switch (swapped all these parts from the 450 in to the 250 and they worked). I checked fuses/relays, traced wires, checked grounds, inspected connectors and everything looks good so I'm assuming it the GEM.
Are the GEM's different from year to year? Are they different from XL to Lariat? I ask because I could pull the GEM from the 250 and try it but I really don't want to risk damaging it because buying one GEM at $300 is bad enough, I really don't need to buy two!
I have searched and read a ton of threads but I have not seen at answer to this: Can a GEM be tested?
It's kinda generic. I called the dealership today and asked about the GEM. They said there are 4 different ones for my year/model of truck. What sets then apart is things like power windows, locks, electric shift on the fly 4wd etc. I just said the hell with it and ordered one because I got a smoking price through a friend who works for a company who has a huge fleet of SuperDutys. Hopefully I can just plug it in, hook up the batteries and everything will work 100%
I'm starting to understand why I got this truck so cheap! Put the new GEM and preesto...no change Still no wipers, washer or horn Does anyone have any other ideas before I do something stupid like buy a complete (new) wiring harness?
Where might I find a link for wiring info like ground locations and a full schematic?
no, no horn click, no click when I hit the wipers or the washer pump. I checked all the relays in my 250 and they are good. I didn't swap the clock spring so the horn and cruise could be caused by that. I'm just wondering if theres something common between all these accessories? Do they all share a ground or a power wire?
This might not help you a whole lot but anyway,
One of our crew trucks at work, its a 2004 f-550 xlt, one day everything worked, next time i drove it the horn and cruise dotn work, but the wipers and wash and everything else still works fine, going to ford on saturday, ill find out what the problem is and let ya know, maybe it can help you, if you dont find out by then.
G100 is a common ground for those items. Its under the hood to the right of the brake booster. Dr side above or even with the top..Hard to see in pic. There is a splice 108 which also has all this stuff on it..
Cruise control doesn't go through gem! Still looking.
I don't see a common power link .
you may have individual issues.. You need a test light and a diagram.
Check for anything else not working. Lights etc
Check for connectors not plugged in fully.
Check fuses under hood?
