While working on my transmission I notice the seals are leaking on my steering box. I have a 78 250 with a 460 engine. I was wondering if the steering box from my 76 parts truck which is a half ton would bolt right on the 3/4 ton truck. It also looks like it would be quite a job to change. Is it easy or is there tricks to do that can make it easier.
ive changed mine a few times. Its not as bad as it looks. Its mainly diconnecting the steering pump hoses, pitman arm, three bolts that run through the frame into the gear box and 1 bolt on the steering shaft. Thats about it. I takes about one hour if the truck doesnt give you a hard time. My only problem is getting the darn steering box and pump to work with each other in a loving manner after getting it put back together. I thought it look like a painful job too, It really isnt.
i changed the steering box in my 3\4 ton 73 ford i put in the same one from another 3\4 ton and it took a couple of hours but i know putting one on from a smaller motor dosent take much longer good luck
GP,
Call a parts store and compare parts numbers. If they are the same your good to go. If there not, you'll have to lay them out on the ground and figure a way to make it work. My guess is the pitman arms are different. Be gentle while doing the swap.

Well you guys make me feel comfortable that I can do it. Just to find the time to do it. Have other things to fix first on the truck. Like keeping it running after 10 miles of driving.
I guess it won't be as difficult as it looks. I just will keep it topped up with fluid til I can make the change. Thanks agian guys and gals.
