The Haynes book makes it look pretty tough... anyone do these lately and do you really need all the special tools? How much money will I be saving if I do it myself, and am I getting in over my head? I've done plugs, shocks, and replaced an AC fan on my explorers as well as locking hubs and ignition parts on my old Bronco... am I building up to a job like this or is my driveway not the place for this surgery...?
I am in the process and have not had to purchase any special tools. I have borrowed a 2jaw puller set from advance auto including the pitman arm puller and will borrow the ball joint press cup tomorrow. It's been a bit time consuming but not to bad so far. I'm about half done replacing both lower ball joints and upper control arms and it has taken about 5-6 hours so far, but I have been working pretty slow.
I just did the front brakes and when I had the wheels off, it looked like it should be so simple to pop the ball joints out and new ones back in... The stupid thing is I bought a nice grease gun when I bought the truck and spent plenty of time looking for the darn non-existent fittings... Can't they just leave some things well enough alone? I always loved a good lube job...
I have a 98 Explorer and as I looked at how hard it would be to do this on my own. I decided that it really didnt look that hard and I called my machanic and ask him how much would this cost to have hime put upper and lower ball joints and front brakes. He told me that it would take only a few hours to do it all. He then told me that total labor cost would be around 75-100 and I always buy my own parts. So that being said it wasnt even worth me wasting my time to do. When it was all said and done I had about 160.00 into it 75.00 labor and 85.00 parts so thats my opinion on it Hope it helps
Just a quick idea get someone to get your parts at wholesale prices. Saves me alot of money as my explorer is nearing the 130,000 Mile mark and is starting to need parts.
Wow, that is cheap. "75.00 labor and 85.00 parts, put upper and lower ball joints and front brakes"
Here in Canada, I paid $200.00CAN labour alone for replacing the lower ball joints only. Even more from the Ford dealers. Plus $160.00CAN for two Moog greasable lower ball joints.
The secret is my best friend own 2 small auto sales. I have known this guy almost my entire life. I can help u guys out with some high price parts if u would like. I can ship just about anything. The little stuff would not be worth it when add in shipping. Just let me know if u guys need anything I can also do next day air through UPS. I am glad to help anyone with explorer related or any other ford realted parts. I can only get ford parts no other brand.
