I'm considering a transmission swap win my '77 F150. It currently has a C-6 mounted behind a 400M with a part time xfer case married to it's tail. I'm thinking about trying to go to an AOD unit for better drivability at todays highway speeds. When did Ford start putting their AOD transmission in 4X4 trucks?
i beleive 83 or 84 was the first year for the aod in trucks. problem is the aod itself. they were not realy strong enough for the truck, if you used them herd or were into serious 4 wheeling or pulling a heavy trailor. the only tranny that will fit is a 460 trany. ford never put an aod behind a 400. i am afraid the 460 tranys are computer controled.
There was a tech article on an Art Carr AOD or EOD that was beefed up about 3 months ago. I'm doing it on my truck in the next year. The guy that did had it in the truck for awhile before he did the tech acticle on it. It was behind a 460 I believe.

I have heard about the AOD not being a strong tranny but I had a snow plowing business back in the Chicago area for almost 10 years. My primary truck was a 86 bronco XLT with a 7 1/2 western pro plow on it. I had no problems with my tranny in the 10 years. I plowded with it and I also pulled a 8000 # boat with it for part of the time. I put a new 302 HO motor in it during that period . Not hearing the tech stuff I thought that tranny was bulletproof. Maybe the rock crawling is harder on it but I still think they can take a pretty good beating. Anyway I think I would still consider one for mine
