I have noticed something, actually I noticed several years ago... Why is it OK to put a Chevy 350 in a Ford, Dodge, Jeep, ******, Jag, Toyota, even a VW, or just about anything!... but dont ever think of putting anything else but a Chevy in a Chevy, that would be sacrilige... You'd think guys building '32 FORDS would wanna put a FORD motor in there, but Noooooooo, they put in a Bow Tie. Why is that???
Cheap parts and supposedly easier to build, but I do agree. If I'm gonna build a Ford hot rod, I want it to be 100% Ford, not 50/50 or some other compromising setup.
Same here its gotta be ALL one brand no sence cheapin out and puttin a boe tie in the car spend some extra $$ and do it right ALL Ford !! anytime i see an older car with a chev or other motor in a Ford i tend to make it clear by sayin aout loud " to bad its got a _____ motor took the easy way out" now try and fit a 460BB in a Ford Ranger short box... wooooweeee pretty big shoe horn needed !!
Well, I think this goes back farther than most of you will remember. I built my first car. It was a 34 Ford 5 window coupe. I put a Corvette engine in it. It was a 283 punched to a 282. It had all the go fast goodies. Turned the quarter 113 mph at 11.13 - real easy to remember. It would if you played with it right do a wheelstand. Why a Chevy engine? In the '60's, what Ford motor was worth a darn? The ol'312? Truck engine yes, race motor-no. Ford didn't have any good motors until they punched the 260 out to the 289. And what did Ford have for a mid size say 350 ci in motor. The 352- still a truck motor. True is Ford motors sucked real bad back in the ol' days.
Yes! This all too true Guys !
Way back when ! when I was in High School.A buddy an me did the unspeak of.We built 2 rods 32 high boy an a 40 coupe both had ford complete drive trains. We took a verbal lashin from some of our peers!
most everyone else took the easy way out !
You will also notice that they always take the 9" ford rear ends though for their projects, because there the strongest.
More an more I'm beginning to see Fords in Fords though!
I think its because of Fords SVT division, along with the Ford racing division starting to build products that help this area.
To add to Richs comments, parts were easy to come by in the ol' days for the Chevys cause those were the motors everybody was hoppin' up. They were also cheap. Nowadays though, the shoe is on the other foot. What small block Chevy is worth having? None. When they finally quit making the 350 they won't have one in mid-size either. Ford finally started to produce decent products and it shows. Ford has 4 of the top ten selling vehicles. The F150, Taurus, Ranger, and Escort. But there is room for improvement on Ford's part. They are going to have to get into the big block business again. Chrysler is playing with a 6.0+ motor and GM already has it's gas hog on the street. And by the way Rich, you and your buddy have got guts, put a Ford engine in a rod? I'll bet you guys were harassed.
Actually, in my opinion, a 312 is a pretty impressive engine. It may not have been a speed demon, but I've seen them do some amazing things. The local fire department has a '61 (I think) F-800 with one in it and the speedometer goes up to 120, and I've seen it near bout there, too. It's all original, too, maybe except for the Holley 4bbl. That sucker'll move! They still use that truck too for brush fires.
It is all simple! There are tons of chebbie engines in junkyards and parts are cheap for them. Chebby did have an advantage back then by horsepower to weight ratio. Fords engines were much heavier than the small block chebbies.
Back to the origional question, a few of my buddies own 32 fords and the real reason that they put chevy motors in is that chevys have the distributor and the oil pump in the back of the motor, and this is better for clearing the older cars suspension and crossmembers. :-X12
Yall are right about the chevy in a ford thing but i seem to think that ford had a good motor in the 60s me and my dad built a 69 mustang gt with a 390 in it. That thing sure does run but i guess most people think thats a truck engine too.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Dec-02 AT 12:56 PM (EST)]Come on now!!
1961 F-800 firetruck approaching 120 mph.
I have to doubt that one a little.
Most firetrucks are governed so they can't go much past 65 mph.
I would like to see the horsepower needed to push a 61 f-800 to those kind of speeds, it sure wouldn't be from a 312 gasburner!!
A long time ago I used to drive a lumber truck that had a 312, and it was pretty peppy when empty. I remember it would rap out fast.
But, put a load on it, and it turned into the biggest dog on the street.
I once overheated that truck real bad, you needed cardboard in front of the radiator to get any heat, so I thought a bigger piece of cardboard would give me lots of heat.
The trouble was I never checked it out myself, I put the giant piece of cardboard in after work, and the next morning my boss took the truck somewhere.
He came back "spittin mad", and I went home with no Butt !!
You want a fun and unheard of swap? 300-6 in an 84 Mazda B-2000, along with a 4x4 conversion. I almost had it done, when I picked up a truck worthy of the engine. I guess that would have been a B-4900, huh?
