[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Dec-02 AT 04:47 PM (EST)]you guys have to remember that in the late 50s and early 60s the 312s were only in thunderbirds and big truck right? i wasn't around back then, but i think im right. so, it would have been pretty hard to get your hands on one of these things. so what else do you have from ford, 272 and 292 y-block. the dist were in the back just like a chevy. they were plentiful, but lacked power unless you have a police interceptor. agian good luck finding one. and you also have the flathead v8. the aftermarket was good for these motors but still all pepped up it still wouldn't have the power of one of those chebbys. if i were around back then i would have had a hemi or something. but nowadays there is no excuse for have one of those pieces of crap in there.
the FE's had not really come along yet. they would have been in a brand new car and they were heavy. thats like today trying to get a 5.4 lightning motor or a 4.6 out of one of those 2003 cobras.

The 312 was also available in the Mercury. My grandfather had one that we entered in the Mobil Economy Run for three years. Now how many of you have heard of that run? Now when I post mileage numbers that most of you don't want to believe- I was conditioned as a kid for it.His Merc had 3 on the tree with overdrive( handle under the dash to engage) and free wheel. So, how many of you know what free wheel is?
