Hi, I am new to the site and own my first ford. its an Explorer XLT AWD that i bought cheap as a car to get me through college. Looking across the forum i noticed that my explorer exhibits many of the problems you all have experienced. The main for me though is the interior lights. My "door ajar" is always on, so my cabin lights always are on. The way this was beat by the preious owner is they just took out the bulbs in, unplugged the one in the rear and turned the two in the back off. I was wondering if anybody could suggest a way for me to check what door striker is screwy, and if they need to be replaced how much would it cost. I have no warranty so if it is alot, i am just not going to bother. Thanks for your help.
This should be an easy fix. One of the switches is stuck closed. You have one on every door. Check them to see if there is free play, spring action. Obviously, they all need to physically get pushed in and "open" for the lights to go out. You can opena adoor one at a time and push the pin it. If one of them makes the lights go out - that's your problem one.
If the 4 main doors look OK, then the rear hatch is integral with one of the door latches. To check this, you'll have to take the rear interior door panel off to get to it.
The (door ajar) there is a switch in the door next to the door lock that go's bad. Most likely it's the drivers door. The only way to fix it is to take the door apart and pull the lock. The switch has a single wire going to it. The switch is a pain to get to, but once you do it the first time the rest are EZ.
So dogman do you mean to say there is a redundant switch in the driver's door? There are 2? Or is the driver's door switch integrated into the latch assembly, similar to the rear hatch?
There are two. There is one switch with 2 wires and the other has 1 wire. The switch with 2 wires is the dome lights the switch with 1 wire is the door ajar light on the dash. You can get to the door ajar switch with a philps driver. Now saying this my two door has 5 door ajar switch 1 on driver and pass door and 3 on the hatch one on the glass lock and 2 on the main door locks one each side.
OH OK. Good to know. My 1993 is too primative - doesn't have a door ajar light. No, I have to be astute enough to hear excessive road noise to know my door is open.
You probably need the plastic roller for the striker. If it is on the liftgate, you can cut a piece of 1/2" copper tubing for a replacement. Works better/ lasts longer. If it is for a door, Ford offers these only as an "assembly" for a ludicrous price. Check out the "Help" parts section at Pep Boys, or CSK Auto. Good luck.
The "Help" roller will not work on the door striker because Ford pressed this assembly together, and made the cheap roller a non-replaceable part. Hence, my reference to the term "assembly". At least that is the way the one was for my Bronco II.
