Sounds like you got enough reasons to go ahead and pull the motor. It makes it easier to get the transmission ;-) I recently pulled it out the bottom, that sucks. And you could easily get at your steering, booster etc :-)
Then, with the engine on the stand "you might as well".................
Hey Greg..should I add the 67 to my list of stuff to pick up too!! what do ya think? Add a Grand to the total?? That should buy gas for the bike for a few years!! LOL..

Sounds like a plan ;-) Come and get it. I'll thro in a 62 cheby, a bucnh of misc. PC parts, a workaholic wife and a few beeras.
Charles, your problems sound very familiar; I've got a freeze plug or two leaking as well. My steering is in good shape though (that was said in a whisper so as not to anger the FE gods!).
Carl, I don't think I'm sucking oil through the PCV; I'm only smoking on one side. If oil was going into the intake, I'd be smoking through both pipes. Also, manifold vacuum is higher at lower RPMs so you'd tend to think it would be worse at idle than 3000 RPMs. I figure a piston is getting ****-eyed and oil is getting past the rings (I think I remember Bear talking about that).
Ok I just thought of something and I hate it when this happens because It always costs me money. If I have the C6 out and the tourqe converter out this would be a good time to get a mild shift kit in it and a new low stall tourqe converter. What stall should I put in about 1800 or 2000?and what mild shift kit? This will or should help mileage I think.
Hey gtex if that 352 ever gets pulled I have a original 390 in a 72 F250 Doner truck with 96k original that is way to nice to be a donor truck that I will take to the machine shop have it gone threw and then i,ll put that in it. And I'm taking your advice fast texan and I'm not speaking loud so they dont hear me.
Rod in backwards so the oil slot isn't lubricating the cylinder which ran dry, scuffed bore, piston and rings? Piston with arrow pointing to the rear of motor,
this will give piston slap. Take it up to 3,000 and look into the rear valve cover
openings for oil flooding. Compression the same on all cylinders on the bank that smokes? Wrist pin snap ring and pin scoring the bore? Yes alot of "could of reasons".
.....=o&o>.....
Yep, there's a lot of things it could be and most of them point to the final assembly. I just hate it because of the amount of work (and expense) it takes to get my motor out and back in again.
Charles, it's actually easier to do the shift kit with the tranny in the truck. The valve body comes out the bottom and that's where all the modifications take place. It's a messy job, but not hard if you follow the instructions carefully. Also, you're going to have a hard time finding a torque converter that shifts at a lower stall than the stock unit; most of us are going for higher stall. If your stock TC is okay, I'd leave it alone. And I suppose it's possible that a firmer shift would improve mileage, but I doubt you'll be able to measure it. Basically, a TC change and a shift kit will make your truck more fun to drive, which, for some reason, tends to result in lower gas mileage.
Thankx FastTexan, This info about the lower stall than stock is what I have been finding out. I had a buddy who had a transmission jack but he gave it away or traded it off so I guess I,ll drag it up to the transmission shop and get them to pull it and put a flywheel on it and if he will, put those freeze plugs in at the same time. I can put them in but I,d have to drag it back home with no tranny in it and then back up there. I,ll have the header and starter off so I dont have to pay for that time. I didnt know how the shift kit was put in so I assumed and you know what that stands for that it had to be out of the truck.Then I,ll drag it back home and install the new Jegs Prostarter thats supposed to be here Tuesday and put the header back on. Then Thursday my new brake booster and Master cylinder is supposed to arrive so I,ll get to that weekend. Thanks again and good luck on your motor
Charley..a lower stall than stock? I never heard of such a converter? Is there such a thing? I would think anything lower than stock would put to much drag on the engine and stall it out....
Thanks Russ, I didnt know i already had the lowest. Just trying to get some mileage outta this thing lol. I think when I get to drive it again next week my foot is gonna be a little to heavy to care about mileage.
Russ, I have a custom made TC (brazed, rollered anti balloon) made for my motor that starts pulling (light throttle 16 inches) at 850 rpm's, if I brake torque in 2nd it holds the motor between 15-1,600 rpm's with a 414 making TQ. With the factory TC stall went from 24 to 2,900 I think it ballooned. With the custom TC the idle hot at 550 and still have a slight creep, put in neutral the rpm's stay at 550, with 3.54 and 32.5" tire. I can get 14.1 mpg with a C-6 at 62 mph. The box will shift at 12 and 18 mph light throttle and not down shift around corners in town unless against the kickdown, modified to not down shift all the time for less wear and tear. If I stomp on it it will upshift 1-2 and 2-3 at 4,500 rpm's. Yes alot more fun with a higher stall but the mileage and wallet are more important. All was built with gas mileage in mind 7 years ago which comes in handy today. 68 CS 56 gallons 3 tanks.
.....=o&o>.....
Well see charley, I learn something new everyday!! I didnt know there was a lower stall than stock..and it seems Carl has one....14.1 mpg is damn good...Mine, I havent ever got any better than 10 mpg...up hill down hill..Pulling the race car and having a Camper on the back... it just gets 10.. Ihad 3 tanks on mine until about a year ago..20 behind the seat, 20 gallon saddle tank.and 30 in the back just above the spare tire carrier...which is no longer there either...
Hmmm, mine doesn't always downshift going around corners anymore either........LMAO!!!
Oh, ya.....I'm on a gas binge too! I know that if you turn the ol 352 up in rpm it eats more fuel, so I let it creep around the corner in 3rd gear(sometimes 4th) more often now. Just doesn't get out of it's own way very quick . But does pass the gas station now LOL!!
Thanks Beemer, Russ and Freightrain, Looks like I,ll be staying stock and going around corners in 3rd lol. My transmission guy just told me if I just wanted a crisper shift he would adjust my C6 with out a kit if thats all I wanted and he said it'd last longer as well.
