Truck Tents

Has anyone bought or used any of the truck tents that are available? I want to know if they're worth buying or if I should stick with my trusty ground model.

Truck Tents

A guy at work had what was called a wildernest on his Truck. Looked like a regular cap but folded out into a rather large pop-up camper. It was really cool. The only downfall to it was it was heavy and had the same limitations as a cap does(and then some) as far as room inside. I have seen some of the tents that hook to the back of the rigid bed covers though. Look pretty good to me!

Truck Tents

If I was going to use one of those truck bed tents I would want to make sure that the tent's rain fly was outside of the box rails all the way around. Seems to me that if it started to rain hard and the fly was directing the runoff inside the box you and your stuff would be floating in no time. Even with the tailgate down and the truck slopping rearward I can see the rain filling it faster than it can run off.

Truck Tents

my girlfriend picked up a Sportz Truck Tent last summer for our regular weekend camping trips and it has worked out great for us. The rain fly extends far enough out that i've never been concerned about rain getting inbetween the bed and the tent, and even if it did there are two factors that make the issue irrelevant, first, if you park on a very slight uphill grade any water would run out the back of the bed before it could accumulate, and second, the lower portion of these tents (everything that is below the bed walls) is made of a heavy, waterproof, plasticized canvas-type material (kinda like those heavy-duty reinforced plastic tarps) so even if the bed did start to fill with water we wouldn't notice or really care much.

Set-up time is much quicker than any comparable sized regular tent, and it stays cleaner/drier overall in wet weather cause it's up off of the wet ground (have seen fellow campers in regular tents get partially washed away by quick torrential downpours that simply flowed underneath the truck (and us).

In summary, i would highly recommend these type of tents... =)
