check engine light on (vehicle speed sensor code ?'s )(I am a newbie)
Greetings!!!
this is my first post,, I need some help fellow Truck guys
I just bought a 1994 F150 Ext.Cab XLT with a 302v8 2wd automatic
I got it pretty cheap
It had some bugs in it and i am trying to work them out.
I cannot get the check engine light to come off
1.The EGR Position Sensor was bad and I replaced that
2.The Engine Coolant Temp Sensor was bad I replaced that
3.I replaced the Idle Air Control Valve it was sticking some
4. IAT tested fine
5.EVR tested fine on ohm resistance and 12volt constant power test/did not do vaccum test.
6.TPS tested fine, it is set at .957 and is very smooth on test when slowly opening butterfly all the way to fully opening
7.EGR was vaccum tested by my buddy and said it was fine
8. fuel filter was replaced
9.spark plugs are good and gapped correctly
10. when i got the truck base timing was set to 18' and I now have it back to 10'(they did not want to fix the truck right)(replace any of the above) so they turned the timing up which makes it not hestitate as bad,ran premium gas in it and got 6-8miles to gallon (on the highway). and they drove it like this way for 2 1/2 years)(Some people I tell you)
(After all of the above I got the gas mileage back to 11-13miles per gallon on highway)
11. (I have not) fuel pressure tested the truck yet guys to check pressure and fuel pump. The truck does take a little longer than usual to start!!!
If i prime the truck 2-3 times before starting it starts right up though.
Well the trucks falls on its face and is stuttering and missing when barly giving it gas, and driving down the highway in the 55mph to 70mph range. If you give the truck medium pedal and full throttle it runs like a champ, smooth and everything. The check engine light keeps going on and off. When the vehicle is cold in the morning It will also make these loud pop signs (vacumm, or ignition wise)when your driving real slow and trying to give it gas and the truck won't go very good, then goes and acts fine for a little bit.
the engine off test is now narrowed down to a Code22 EGR not opening, but I am doing a process of elimination. So i am trying to find out about the VSS sensor
I did the check engine light test while truck running and i got a Code 27
which is the Vechile Speed Sensor. but the Speedometer does not jump or act weird, so I am confused with this code.
I look under the Truck at the transmisssion and there is no VSS in the rear housing of the tranny, just a cover plate and bolt, and I have a connnector that would reach there with a factory cap on it. This connector is about a 1/2" diameter with two prongs in it.
the VSS Sensor itself is a 1/2" by 1/4" oval connection
My transmission has a 14bolt pan and says Metric on the bottom of it.
I searched this forum last night and read I think that 1992-1996 Ford automatic trucks have the VSS located in the rear-axle of the truck, it was late last night and I have not looked on mine yet.
Is this true, and what do you guys think about the check engine light coming on and off, and the stuttering and no power for a couple of seconds
Which Transmission do I have (it has push button overdrive and about four or five sets of connectors going too the tranny)
I know I am asking alot guys but I have spent so much time on this truck lately that my wife is going to kill me if I don't quit. But I want the truck to run great again. Its my first Ford Truck and I just want it to run like it is suppose to again.
Thanks for your repliesand help in advance

does anybody know who i could pm or email for help with this topic.
I am new to this websites, what the usual amount of time to get a couple of responses from anybody.
I was hoping to have a plan together for this evening on new things to try to fix this problem

I think yor cause is a fuel problem. If you have to prime 2-3 times, something is wrong. Either the Fuel regulator is closed, injectors are leaking, or the fuel pumps are weak. Like you said, a fuel pressure test will tell you.
As for the VSS, i think some are located in the rear differential. (if i'm wrong, someone will correct me).

Duct Tape will fix that light :-) , for the rest, I would check your Throttle Position Sensor.
yes, the Speed Sensor is located in the rear axle.
From the sounds of it, the Trans is a E40D (Large Pan). There has been a lot of problems with this Design as I am one of the Victims. If you are not having problems with it, make sure you keep it serviced so you do not.

For the tranny, look at your door VIN sticker. Looks where it says TRANS. If it has an E its the E4OD, if it has a U its the 4R70W.
I just went and looked at my rear diff. The VSS is located right on top. You can follow a wire loom that leads to it.

memorex thanks
1.yes it was a code32
2.also if the speedometer works correctly in the dash, needle doesn't shake, could the VSS really have something wrong with it. I searched and they all were saying that it would jump around.
3.i don't have to prime it to start it up, but if i don't, it takes 1 to 3 seconds of cranking before it starts up, I am suppose to get my fuel pressure tester back from thhe guy i lent it to tonight, so i will start checking that stuff next.
4. i have two tank switch button, are there two fuel pumps to, my buddy said to try putting fuel in the other tank and see if the truck runs better, what do you guys think
Nate
I'll keep you guys updated.

can the check engine while running test really since the VSS is bad just setting there idleing in the driveway, going through its tests.
this was the only code i got at this time.
since the begining everytime i fix something on it, the check engine light will come on and keep saying something else after i just fixed what the codes said before
does the computer just work that way

welcome to fte!
it would help if you asked one question at a time.
response is very quick on this forum.
when you set timing did you have spout removed?
do you have a manual for this truck?
vss is at top of rear end. remove and clean.
e4od is probably the trans. check door code sticker.
change fluid in trans, change filter and drain convertor soon.
convertors or exhaust are probably clogged or bad. use a vacuum gauge to test.

1.yes timing was set with spout connector out, i have a 95 302 mustang i race on the side, so i have some experience on that subject
2. yes i have a Haynes Manual
3. i have a new vss sensor never used that came with the truck, and previous owner did not know anything about (Truck was passed on from Father to Son)
4.i will check door stick in the next hour for tranny code
5. if i take truck to exhaust shop after running for a while is a heat gun good enoughh to diagnose the converters
6. the truck has 161,000 miles on it---mainly highway, Valve seals good, no smoke on start up and and no smoke when running it hard, and still runs strong for what it is

The VSS can set a code just sitting there. If it's sending a signal that's "out of range" to teh computer. IT should read 0 pulses stopped, if it's outside that at rest then it will set a code.
