I am filling out an application for a county job. There is a veterans preference part of the Appl. Now there is on part of the qualifications that say's A Veteran of any warwho has served at least one day or more during wartime era, and who was discharged or seperated therefrom under honorable conditions from the armed forces. Active duty for training is not allowed. Now I was in during the Gulf war, however did not go overseas. Does that count and should I claim it??
Al
As long as you were on active duty. I've been in the national guard for over 20 years, and I can not claim veterans preference since I was never activated to federal service for gulf war 1 or 2.
In answer to your question:
If you served over 180 days CONTINUOUS active duty service during a period of declared war, you are considered a veteran. The Gulf War has not been concluded, so every servicemember who completes 180 days CONTINUOUS active duty (after basic training and advanced training) becomes eligible for full veteran's benefits.

One caveat to my last post. You must have served under HONORABLE conditions. Dishonorable discharges, general discharges due to inadaptability to military life don't qualify.
Well I guess I qualify. However I never got a Discharge Certificate from Active duty. I got one from the inactive reserves. My DD-214 has everything, including the Honorable Discharge. The web-site for the job say's that I need my DD-214, Discharge certificate, and a letter of elagebility??? Also never recieved my national defense metal? I got the ribbon. All this happened almost 16 years ago. I will submit under Veterans Preference and take it from there. Also all veterans deserve a thank you. War or not! Thanks too them and there family's for there service. Thanks Guy's.

I think the elegabilty letter they might be referring to is the 20 year letter of eligabilty for retirement benefits. Wonder if they might be talking" any one of the following"? Might be missing on the web site. I've got the DD214 and the retirement letter but the dd214 is the prime form they probably want.
