I have a 1978 Ford F150 Ranger XLT 351M/400 2bbl
I recently put a new 351 in my engine and I set the timing by ear due to the fact that I cant find the plate that tells me the BTDC*. Im scared I might damage the pistons. It is a Non-Egr engine.
Although you can get an engine to run, and often just fine the method you used, it's always a good idea to degree-in the cam after installing it. I have found cams right out of the box as much as 12 degrees out in their manufacture. Try to run something like that and you've got problems!
Go to http://www.angelfire.com/realm2/autotips/linkspage.html
and slide on down the page to cam dial-in. There are other things there that might interest you as well.
Cheers Cobber
