Any manufacturer, if you opt for a 4bbl, which you should consider, yep, even if your goal is better mpg.
If you looking for higher compression, then you will have to get creative with 351w or 390 pistons or milling of the head, again, doable, or there are companies that offer specific higher compression pistons for the 300 but they aren't cheap.
If you have the carbed head that does not use pedastel mount rockers, then you could pick up a set of stock chevy 250/292 rockers, bolt them on (so I hear) and gain a little more lift at the valve, which = more torque. Still doable with pedastel mount head just cost more for the conversion kit, however, if your after a new cam, then you can find your additional lift there.
Ebay is your friend, well, unless someone screws you.
The parts are out there, the hard part is keeping your expectations reasonable.
Good luck

Then build the rest of the exhaust as cheap as possible.
Use quality parts and tune up the engine. C**** rockers for 260/292 L6 do work if you have stud mount rockers (which you should - pre '84?)
The result should be better accel., better mpg, more HP & TQ, and a lighter wallet. LOL
thanks for the info i took a look at clifford's website lots of goodies i cant wait to get started but for now my wifes vw jetta needs a water pump so my extra cash is going that dirrection for now but no worry waiting a little longer will only make it sweeter when i get me a few hop ups i would just say the heck with that vw but while it is down she is driving my 2nd love my mustang --yikes -- lol ...so will a 4 bbl do a better job power vs gas mph seems a little overkill but hey the last 300 i6 i owned was 13 yrs ago havent messed with em in a long while - what is the pros vs cons 2bbl vs 4 bbl ? again guys thanks for all your great info

I'm also interested in pros vs cons 2bbl vs 4 bbl. I'm shopping for a new carb for my '78. What's the way to get the best gas mileage? Can I get close to the best by just using the right new carb and keeping all the other stuff stock?
A 2 Bbl. operates constantly on the 2 big jets that it has installed, which means you are constantly dumping large amount of petrol into the carb. wether you are cruising or needing a massive amount of power all @ once.
Where as a 4 Bbl. will run on the 2 smaller jets for cruising untill you engage the 2 bigger jets for a massive power jump.
You just can't do much better than the 390, on a stock or slightly modified 300. I swapped out the stock 1bbl for a Clifford intake & EFI exhaust, and got the same MPG's, but much more HP.
At partial throttle, you're running on the front two - or ~ 195 CFM = good mileage. Then, get on it & the back two open up = performance ( with the right vacuum secondary spring).
I've been running mine for about two years now, and have been very pleased.
