That remco pump is a good place for me to start. I wonder why it says for front wheel drive only, anybody know? We'll here is the real application. I didn't want to spill the beans cuz it seems like every thread that turns to out of the box stuff dies on this forum. I'm mounting a "pony engine" under the hood(yes theres room). Its probably going to be a 3 cylinder perkins diesel. Its going to power a gen/welder and a pressure washer so i don't have to idle the powerstroke. I will be installing an extra transfer case so i have increased offroad ability. That will leave me with an empty front yoke on the front tcase. So just to say i did it i was thinking about running a shaft from the pony to that to use for either "limp home mode", or even possibly a fuel efficent overdrive for late night long-hauls depending on how and if i gear it. I was once told it only takes about 20hp for a truck to maintain 65mph. You guys think thats true?

Interesting project!

20HP? Sounds quite low ... unless it's VERY aerodynamic, I'm guessing nearer to 80 or 100.

the figure i was given in an engineering class on the topic of hybrid electrics was 35 horse in the arodynamic hybrid styling to cruise level ground and maintain 60 mph. add in the fact that the SD is the equivalant to a brick wall compared to a hybrid car and weighs close to 4X's as much and id say the 80 to 100 horse mentioned above is a good number to cruise flat land

i have no facts to back this up, merely a combination of what i heard and some enginerding inferences ( A.K.A SWAG), if someone knows more, please corect me, id like to know the actual figures.

a little google:
1
passenger cars require 25 or so horsepower to cruise at 60 mph while 35 horsepower is enough to drive a large SUV at that speed.

2
When a 150 hp engine is just cruising along at, say, 10 hp, which is all you need to maintain cruising speed, fuel consumption per unit of output can double or triple. A gasoline engine operates most efficiently at about 75 - 80 per

Good info bigsub, the 75-80% rings a few bells.

Not sure I follow all this, but it sounds like you're talking about driving a transfer case through it's front output yoke?

If so, and if the gearing will quite work that way (I'm not at all sure that it would, but I don't wanna poop on your idear) but if it did, are you thinking you'd get up to speed with the PSD, then shut it off and fire up the perkins? I don't see how you'd drive your power steering, brakes, alternator, whatever...

Again, I hate to poo-poo your idea, cause I LOVE outta-the-box, but there's still some thinkin to do...

Good luck...

Robert
