I have a 1985 F-150 4x4 with an inline six. The truck has been sitting for a couple years. Dropped in a battery and replaced the soleniod, and she turned over like it ran everyday. The truck would not fire up though. It will start when some gas in poured into the carb but stalls after the gas has been used up. It has a tank full of new gas I just put in. What should I look into first? Is it a carb problem, fuel pump, or maybe a blockage somewhere? All suggestions welcome.
Thanks,
Rick
I blew out all the lines, nothing blocking them. They all look in good condition. I replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter. I still have the same result, any other ideas?
Well, that pretty much covers it all. About the last thing would be maybe your float is stuck shut. Try cranking on the engine with the line disconnected at the carb, (be careful here, don't want a fire!). If it's pumping fuel to the carb then your problem is in the carb. If it's not pumping fuel, maybe the lobe on the cam that works the fuel pump is wore down?
Will have a look at the carb tomorrow. I was thinking of buying something new or rebuilt to replace the 1 bbl carter, what are some good options?
Thanks,
Rick
The Carter is a good enough option and easily rebuilt. Reliability and simplicity are a big plus. If gas is allowed to dry out long enough it turns to a white powdery substance and can make a carb virtually useless unless cleaned well and rebuilt. That could be an issue but I personally have resurected more than one vehicle that sat for several years and never rebuilt the carb. It just takes a while for the thing to kind of come back to life. There are other options that are popular like getting an aluminum intake and a Holley 2 barrel carb. They say that the large carb will actually increase your gas mileage. That's a big plus if true. It all depends on how far you want to go with things and what you can afford. I say if it aint broke don't fix it but you are at a crossroads as you dont know for sure what is broke, if anything.
2 things: Is gas making it to the carb? Is gas entering the carb. If you can get a flow of gas to that fuel bowl that thing should run on its own insted of bottle fed. Check for a squirt of gas down the throat when you pump the throttle...
I have no gas coming to the carb, or the pump, the lines coming from the tank to the pump and from the pump to the carb have been cleaned. I tried to blow compressed air down the metal tube coming from the tank that connects to the rubber line but the air would not flow through. Leaves me to think that there's something in the tank blocking the flow of fuel. Is there any way to open up the tank and have a look inside?
Thanks,
Rick
Make sure that the butterfly valve at the top of the carb isn't stuck closed. This has happened to me multiple times. It will turn over perfect but never fires (no air, duh).
I'm thinking the gas in the tank has gone bad and plugged the small gas line coming from the tank, will take tank apart in coming days. A friend of mine has a holley 4 bbl on his inline six. Can I buy the same carb and bolt it on or would I need a different intake for that? I have a completly stock inline six at the moment.
Thanks for all your help,
Rick
Problem fixed, turned out to be the line coming out of tank with the sending unit on it. It was plugged pretty good, but I got in good and clean. As for a carb not sure what I'll do there yet but will figure something out shortly.
Thanks for all your help,
Rick
