computer need help

I did a clean install of Windows (XP) after my old one had some virus which screwed up things.

I thought the new one would just erase the old one, so my computer will be factory fresh again.

But instead, I have TWO operating systems now. The old and the new. Each time I turn on the computer I have to choose which operating system I want to use. It's annoying and takes up space.

How do I get rid of the old one?

Thanks.

When you boot the windows disk it will show you the partitions on your Hard drive and you will be able to delete them and setup new partitions. you need to delete the partition the old install is on. The best way to go is to delete all the partitions and build a new one the size of your HDD. Then just reinstall windows in the new partition.

The only thing to add to Cravin's post is when you delete the partitions and create the new partition, let XP set up the HDD as NTFS.

My pc is runninng on a FAT 32 partition and have not had problems (knock wood), but, I've read that NTFS is best.

My 2¢.

Sorry, I'm not computer literate at all. Can you tell me in more detail about the process? When to press what... What menu to go into...

I already reinstalled a brand new window. So I have to use that Window disk again?

Thanks

This is where we old timers need the 14 yr old next door... If you have a kid in the neighborhood throw him a $20 and let him do it for you. NTFS is the best but the old FAT32 system works OK also. NTFS can mess you up with rights, ownership, and sharing, etc.

That is really a complicated thing to talk someone thru.

IF it's a dell, gateway or other prefab machine look for a "recovery" or "restore" disc. This will set the computer back to what it was when it was new.

Try this site for some good screenshots and tips of the installation procedures.

I erased all the previous partition and made a new one with 30GB. I reinstalled windows. Then I installed a computer game, Grand Theft Auto (the one from couple of years ago), and it won't play because "it can't find enough video memory". That's impossible because I could play very recent and graphic intensive games before I did the clean install.

Is there something missing?

NTFS is pretty much a must if you do any large dvd video editing and stuff like that.

Let's look at a few other things.
What are the system specs?
What other programs do you have running at the same time?
Do you have an elaborate 'background' or 'wallpaper' on your desktop??
Video card - how much memory on the card? Is the video card incorporated into the Motherboard?
RAM? How much and what type? DDR or SDRAM?
What type of processor? What speed is the processor?
What are the minimum requirements for the game you are trying to load and play?

The reason I ask these things are it sounds like you don't have enough RAM and that (just maybe) the video RAM is shared RAM.
Don't get me wrong, I'm no expert, but, I've been around the block with this sort of thing, before.
Plus, someone is bound to ask these and other questions, soon.
