I bought my PSD (1999) used. When I got it, it was already setup for trailer brakes with the controller and everything. Is that a standard option for the Diesel trucks since we haul or was that added by the first guy? Also at the back of the truck where the round plug pluggs in is loose and not tought with the ends on the trailer and wanted to know if I could replace just the unit that is mounted to the bumper? I traced all the wiring around into the bed and is all has FORD wiring....would that make it original I take it?
Even if it is factory installed, you can go to any auto parts store, truck accessory, RV , WalMart, U-Haul...you get the picture, and get the part(s) you need. You'll save $$ over going to the dealer. It just depends which plug your trailer has. Is it a 5,6 or 7 wire? You need to get the same female end as the male end on your trailer. It is also possible that the plug on the end of your trailer has some wear too if it is older.
If you go to a trailer dealer or RV shop they could fix you right up if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself. They would know as well or better what you need as the dealer.
i have never seen a trailer brake controller as a "factory option" (eccept for the '05s and newer). if you want a new bracket for the round 7 and flat 4 connector the ford part number is yc3t-14a206-c
when we got the 6 plug (there is a flat four, round six, and a much larger round 7 types) installed on our trucks, we just used one of the license plate lights. since you only need one for legal purposes, use the left one for the 6-pin female plug. it will serve its purpose. both of our trucks we pull with have 4 and 7 plugs on the bracket that wlihntr mentioned.

Both of the trailer plugs (7 and 4 pin) are factory original, as well as the brake controller wiring all the way to the dash. The controller itself was added by a previous owner, or the dealership.
