I have 2 66's, one with seatbelts, one without. I was told it was between 72 and 74 that seatbelts became mandatory equipment an all vehicles, some could still be purchased without though.
Seatbelts can save lives and in a minor accident reduce injuries. I don`t feel safe without seat belts even though I hated them at first. The same goes for motorcycle helmets.
I still don't know about airbags though, only GM could think of building a safety device with gunpowder.
One point with seatbelts, make sure they are not twisted, they can slice though your skin pretty bad in a accident. (espically on the shoulder and waist)
As a 1st responder for years and worked in the mountains doing rescue work. I never saw anyone decapitated from the seatbelts, but lots of gashes and severe bruising. These even happen with seatbelts properly installed from factory. Some injuries are from poor factory designs.
I seen drivers killed from rear passengers flying into them. Of course not belted in.
Wow you must have seen some pretty nasty stuff. I remember hearing about the whole decapitation thing when I was still in high school, and it very well could have been a rumour.
Seat belts became manditory in 1968 thanks to that Commie Ralph Nader. Insurance companies such as sgi and mpic are full of pencil pushing facists who's life work is to impose THEIR agendas on us all in the name of safety. They flap their jowls and say that 55% of people killed in car accidents were not wearing seat belts......(the other 45% are still dead) JUST MY HUMBLE OPINION but seat belts should be left up to the person driving and THEIR assesment of the risk involved in the endeavor being undertaken.
I agree with you that the person driving should be able to choose whether or not to wear a belt. But unfortunatly it is the law, and it is a dumb thing to get a ticket for I guess!
