3,000 miles and I am changing the oil tonight. However, what shall I use? I always used Mobil 1 in my 99 SD. A friend told me he understands that Ford says not to use synthetic until 10,000 miles and to use semi-synthetic instead.
Does anyone know why I shouldn't use full synthetic and what Ford's reccommendations are?
I have been told by more than one mechanic that synthetic oil in a new engine will not let the rings seat properly. To use regular motor oil for the 1st couple of changes then swap. I used Motorcraft 5 W 20 for the 1st 2 changes then switched to Amsoil at about 10,000 miles...in my 2003 F250 5.4
That's interesting, since a number of manufacturers, including Dodge (Viper & SRT Ram),
Chevy (Corvette), Cadillac, and a number of Mercedes modes leave the factory with Mobil 1 in the crankcase.
Also double check that the Mobil 1 is diesel rated and meets your engine's spec. Many of the new Ford diesels use engine oil in their injectors. A non diesel rated oil will foam and cause problems. I don't think M1 meets your spec, but things always change.
A lot of new engines(I think mostly gas) come with syn in them so I assume new machining methods don't worry about syn versus dino for breakin. However, even though syn is my religion, I prefer to run at least to about 3,000 on dino to break in an engine.

This exact Mobil 1 issue has been discussed at length in the 6.0 Forum as recently as yesterday in a thread titled: New Ford TSB Regarding Oil & Perfomance Issues. Essentially, there are two M1 oils (with identical specs) marketed for diesels: Delvac1 for the industrial applications which is sold through distributors and Mobil1 Truck & SUV for consumers, sold at retail stores. Below is a brief description (cut & pasted) from Mobil's website:
Mobil 1 Truck & SUV is engineered for hard-working gasoline and diesel engines. Mobil 1 Truck & SUV is a high performance, fully synthetic engine oil that provides unsurpassed lubrication and extreme temperature performance for today's gasoline and diesel engines operating in severe applications.
Applications
Mobil 1 Truck & SUV is a 5W-40 viscosity grade product and is recommended by ExxonMobil where 5W-30, 10W-30 and 15W-40 lubricants are specified. Consult your owner's manual for specific manufacturer recommendations which may be required for warranty protection.
Mobil 1 Truck and SUV is recommended for use in gasoline and diesel powered trucks and SUVs built by Ford, GM, and DaimlerChrysler.
Mobil 1 Truck and SUV further meets the diesel engine requirements of Cummins, Powerstoke, Duramax and Navistar – for bigger, heavier duty truck applications, such as delivery vans and utility fleets.
Mobil 1 Truck and SUV is fully compatible with conventional engine oils.
