You can get all kinds of opinions on this and discussion threads.Either oil type is fine if you want to try synthetic and can afford the price go for it.If you stay with 15-40 you will still be fine.
I have never tried synthetic in mine, mainly because of the price.
Down there in Florida I'd just stick with dino 15w40. If you have tired injectors it can help, a lot of guys run Rotella T6 or Mobil 1 TDT, but strictly from a temperature standpoint, you should be just fine with 15w40 year-round down in warm weather country.
I switched to Rotella synthetic at about 175,xxx and my truck loves it.Definitely better cold starts, but it runs smoother/a little quieter all around, and yep tired injectors will love it,and also after switching it never developed any leaks. You can also go a little longer between oil changes, but I wouldn't do that unless you start getting an oil analysis,I just sent my first sample in.
Synthetic oil is better, hands down, as long as it's rated for your engine. Easier cold starts, last longer, less sheering, protects better...just plain old better.
And take advantage of oil analysis, if you are interested in extended runs. I have a fumoto valve so I can take sample without removing the drain plug. Send my samples into Blackstone Labs and they analyze the oil, let you know what they find, what it means, and how much life is left in your oil.
IMHO the biggest advantages to synthetics are the cold flow properties. If you live in a part of the coutry where day time highs don't drop below 40 or 50 degrees then synthetic might be overkill.
I have Amsoil 15W40 in my 7.3, came in it when I bought it, PO swore by it. I'm scared to see what it will cost when the oil change is due....
It will be expensive, but you don't have to stick with Amsoil. You can use any good diesel oil and keep trucking, maybe give Rotella T6 a try if you want to stay synthetic, it's fairly inexpensive and very easy to find. Works great in our trucks too.

How many miles between oil changes on "good" diesel oil versus synthetic?
Depends on how you use your truck. I am mainly on the highway about 70% and 30% city driving and seldom offroad for about 25k a year, Ive have been going 10-12k miles between oil changes for about 4 yrs, backed up by UOA from Blackstone. Have since installed bypass filtration hoping to make it longer. I you do more city driving vs highway or get offroad in dusty conditions alot, it will most likely not be able to make this long an interval.

5,000 miles on dino Rotella or Delo are what almost everyone does, more if you use synthetic T6 or TDT (or similar). I'd probably stick with 6k on T6 personally becuase we have a ton of moisture in the air here and some of the nation's worst traffic on the freeways.
