What's this device for?

I have a 2006 motorhome on an E450 chassis w/V10 power and while "checking out" the undercarriage for loose/missing/broken fasteners, etc., I came across a large [~3' long] plastic device strapped to the outside of the driver's side frame rail. Since this forum won't allow picture posts I'll describe it as best I can:

Unknown device has numerous hoses of varying size going in both front & rear directions; the shape is generally cylindrical with coned ends & about 5" in diameter at largest point; device seems to be fastened to frame rail near its midsection & not very firmly at that. I can shake it easily & am concerned it could fall off unknowingly during a wild ride over rough pavement [or worse].

I gave a local Ford dealer the part number [6C24 9E857 EA] along with the vehicle's VIN & the dealer was unable to either find or identify the part. He did say however that it was a Ford part, and not from the MH manufacturer.

Anyone on the forum have an idea as to what the part is or its function?

That's the Illudium PU-36 Explosive Space Modulator! Don't touch it!

Did you mean to say 3 inches or 3 feet?

Maybe I should just jettison the POS and be done with it. And yes, I did say 3 feet [long], not 3 inches....

Hey zooom. It's easy to start your gallery.

Click on your user cp or user control pannel, then click edit gallery, then click create album.

Now to see someones gallery just click on someones name and you'll see the gallery link.

Hope that helped.

Are you sure that's the right part number? You can go to any ford dealer who sells parts online and do a part number search. I did and your part number didn't work. Perhaps you wrote it down wrong or some part of the part number was obscured by dirt.

I have the adhesive paper tag[that has the part # on it] from the item in question. I took this tag along with several clear digital photo's of the object to my local Ford dealer who then spent ~45 minutes on his PC trying to look it up.

No glory. In fact, the Ford dealer had a hard time "understanding" the VIN which I gave him [from my registration papers].

I guess the day of the real parts man [or woman] is long gone, i.e., one who could recognize by sight - especially at a dealership where they only sell their brand products!

Darn it, stop talking about it and set up your gallery with those digital photos so we can see for ourselves.

Yep, after seeing the pics I'll also put a nickle down on it being the EVAP canister. It's purpose is emmisions related and captures fuel tank vapors to be burned in the intake. The wires connect to the ECU and monitor the pressure and status. Modern (post '96) systems have known to be problematic causes of Check Engine Lights (CEL).

In my '90 E-150 it's a coffee-can looking thing attached to the frame rail near the center of the van. Much simplified, but not as effective.

What triggers the light is the gas cap not being screwed down tight. The sensor reads low pressure in the tank and then tirggers the light.
