What triggers the light is the gas cap not being screwed down tight. The sensor reads low pressure in the tank and then tirggers the light.
Ah... you and every BMW tech we encountered... "You didn't get the cap on right.." or, "the cap is bad.. buy a new one."
This is a sore subject with me... the BMW E36 (3 series) is notorous for EVAP system faults. It's almost NEVER the gas cap or has anything to do with the cap. It's a leak somewhere in the system that causes pressure differential that the computer doesn't like... This drove us nuts until we sold the car.
