I bought some dome light switches from Motohaven and they arrived in a Ford box and the correct part number is on the box and Motohaven says they are correct...but...these things look so long that there is no way the door will close once the switch is installed and would either crush the switch or dent the door. Has anyone changed these out with new ones from Ford, Motohaven etc... and if so what were the results? Also, how did you get the wires detached from the switch and attached to the new ones, my service manual doesn't get into it and the wires don't appear to just detach. Thanks for any help!
It has been a while since I replaced them on my 78. They do look long when they are in the package. When you install them the sleeve around the switch gets pushed back inside the bushing by the door. Kind of a "self adjusting" rig. Then when the door opens the spring pushes the **** back out and the contacts make. I don't remember the wire connections tho.
Dennis,
This is a link to the switch. The button part compresses like the rusted up original but the metal "shaft" that the button slides into is much longer and doesn't seem to be able to move at all. Thanks for any help.

The metal shell WILL shove down inside the bushing. It is not made to be easy to move. Once it is "adjusted" by closing the door you don't want it to move. Just believe me, connect the wire, install the switch, close the door, and enjoy the light. A little silicone dielectric compound on the contact area, wires, shaft and housing will help prevent corrosion.
