my 85 ranger with the 2.8 v6 has some stanking exhaust.(no cat con) just oil burning with a little smoke. don't believe cracked or damaged rings, most likely worn cylinder which is scuffed a bit. has rebuilt heads, good and even compression. carbon deposits on plugs(not wet and oily but black, dry soot), so engine probably running too rich. which seems to be true after warmed up, i can create a vacuum leak by removing a small plug and engines idles better/faster. I also have both idle bleed screws all the way in (in effect cutting the idle circuits) and still running rich. Not much dark smoke, mainly white/blue smoke. I'll rebuild the carb. double check for water leaks with good block/head sealant. but still need a good way reduce oil burning/smoking/stanking exhaust if not all but eliminate it without opening up or replacing engine.
I would also run a compression test on the engine. You might have a bad piston ring that is letting oil get into the cylinders causing the smoke and smell.
Check the carb float level & the float seat's seal & the float itself.
If the float is leaking & has fuel in it, it'll not rise to cut the fuel off when the float bowl is full & it'll overflow, causing a rich mixture you can't control with the idle mixture screws.
Same for the floats needle valve seal, or if the float drop adjustment setting is off such that it allows the float bowl to over fill.
So too will excessive fuel pressure, so I'd probably check that first as it's easier to do.
didnt have pressure gauge to check fuel pressure. it is a brand new fuel pump though. I did check needle and float which seems to be in good shape. there is window or marks to check fuel level in bowl. but i did lower the float about 3 or 4 millimeters and this seems to have help. now idles good with idle bleed screws out by 3 turns. but still blowing dark smoke(not as much though) under full throttle load.
