Tranny swap

I am looking at changing out the transmission in my 98 Ranger 2.5L from automatic to manual. I was wandering if any of you have any tips on how to cut the hole for the clutch peddal in the floor board with out screwing it up. Any tips would be greatly apperciated. This is the first time I have swap an automatic for a manual and I don't want to screw up cutting the whole and having everything out of wack because of it.

You shoudn't have to cut very much at all. The only cut should be for the shifter, which it may already be there and covered by a bolted on plate. You can take the plate from the donor truck. You shouldn't need to cut for pedals, the hole should be there in the firewall covered by a plate. You can't just add a clutch pedal, you need to swap the clutch and brake pedals in from the manual trans. truck. Just inspect how everything is on the donor truck. They don't change the cabs between trucks with different transmissions, they just cover the extra holes.

As noted, you don't have to cut anything. One body from the factory with a few holes covered up to keep costs down.

If you are swapping mainly because of the lag in the auto tranny, it might be better to get a chip for your truck. It would help raise the shift points and get more revs out of the engine before shifting. Probably help mpg's, too.

Boy, with the 85 miles/day of driving I have to do from home-work-school-home, I wish for an automatic sometimes......If I rest well this weekend, I'll forget that thought.

Thanks guys you have been a huge help. I'm not swapping tranny's because of lag in the automatic. This truck is the first automatic I have had since I started driving and I just prefere manual over auto. Thats really the only reason I am swapping them out. Thanks again for all the help.
